Buddy Miles - Them Changes
Wow, nice one. Going way back in the time machine.
i saw Bob Fay (ex-Sebadoh drummer, worked at In Your Ear records in Boston and gave me tons of good recommendations when i first moved into Boston) post about this record a couple of months ago and i found a copy in my local used shop, damn it's good! killer covers of "Dreams" and "Down By The River" and the originals cook w/ gas too.

Been listening to Gordon's Fri-Sat homecoming recordings from last weekend. Hoping a recording of the Thursday night show is posted soon.

I'm getting to the point where I'm not an objective observer when it comes to HFTRR, as I think they are on a pretty incredible hot streak going back to The Navigator. Life on Earth was my AOTY in 2022. For my money, Life on Earth is a better record than The Past Is Still Alive, which, if I have one criticism, can be a little bit monotone musically. It's a tone I really dig, though.

Excited to see them live for the first time in April.

Been listening for 2 days and I'm hooked. This is a really good record. And wouldn't you know it they're playing Philly tomorrow night and I have no plans on the calendar. 8-)

Did I really say this? 2024 is no longer sparse. Totally into the new Hurray for the Riff Raff, plus these two new ones are out today:

^^^ Special note on this one:
Scott Low is a heathen who owns a camp on Warwoman Creek in Clayton GA which is in the appalachian mountains about 80 miles north of Athens. He's got his wife and two little kids there and he hosts rock shows and fly fishing at his campground. I've made the trip up to his place a few times to do some fishing during homecoming weekend. Scott is a blues/folk/country/rock musician (and a huge DBT fan) with a good catalogue of records to his name. On this new one he's got himself a dobro guitar and he wrote a record paying homage to his appalachian roots. It's really good.

Really glad you dig the new HFTRR. I was listening to The Navigator this morning and man...Alynda is one of the best we've got.

I doubly appreciate this recommendation to give me a new association with Clayton, GA. It's really close to my wife's hometown across the border in NC and we drive through it all the time en route from Atlanta. The thing that always sticks out about Clayton in my mind is the Lost Cause/White Supremacist shithole called "The R*bel Shop." Check out their website if you want to despair for humanity. I never doubted there's lots of great folks in that town, but every time I see that place my blood pressure spikes. Will add this to the weekend list.

I've seen that Rebel Shop each time I've driven in and out of Clayton. It actually surprises me that I don't see more Trump/Rebel stuff when I drive thru North Georgia. I think rural PA has more. Anyway, Scott Low's place is called Hatch Camp and Art Farm. He hosts live shows in the summer and they look really cool. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

The Greatest Soul Album of All Time

One of my favorite things about traveling to Europe is shopping for music (usually cd's, occasionally vinyl). Europeans have a wonderful appreciation for rock/soul/r&b/blues music and often a slightly different take from American taste, especially as expressed through the major music companies. Finding rarities has become less of a big deal given the deluge of albums reissued on cd, though I'll still sometimes find a rare one or just an album I've forgotten about. But the collections, oh my! Sometimes I'll buy one even if I have just about everything on it just for the playing order (yes, i know...this is more fun) or for the liner notes and on others there'll be a hit i missed along the way, an obscurity, including both one shots and less well-known tracks by well-known artists, and sometimes there's just something oddball about the way the collection is put together that appeals to me. Given the usual prices for the mostly used discs, I can afford to indulge these, ummm, discretionary interests, up to a point.

On this one I just heard a fabulous and hysterical duet between Isaac Hayes and Millie Jackson that I had never heard before. Oh, and they love Millie over there, which is a great thing. Then there's the playing order, where you get runs like "Juicy Fruit," "Your Body's Callin'," and "Bodytalk." And that's just on the first disc!

And then there's the true oddball stuff. Like the other collection I bought on my recent trip, Pure...70's Dance Party. Note the title and then consider these selections: "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks, "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf and "Can't Help Falling in Love," the Andy Williams version. Yes, that Andy Williams. Now imagine 4, yes four, discs of this stuff mixed in with the songs that "should" be in a collection with this title. What's not to love?

Also bought a very fine Chess blues guitar collection which includes some lesser known (at least to me) musicians as well as all the usual suspects.
