What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Fans of mid-90s Guided by Voices will find lots to like about this 2013 album that just registered on my radar this week. Interestingly enough, Connections is also from Ohio.
Indeed. Works well for me. Not just from Dayton, but Pollard endorsed (well 2 of the main guys from their prior band)

Per AMG Bio:
Walking a tightrope between post-punk and indie pop, Connections are a band from Ohio whose music is lean, scrappy, and full of energy, with plentiful guitars along with abundant melodic hooks. Connections were founded in 2010 by vocalist Kevin Elliott and guitarist and principal songwriter Andy Hempel. Elliott and Hempel were high-school friends who began writing and recording songs together in their mid-teens, growing up in the suburbs of Dayton, Ohio. Elliott and Hempel were founding members of the band 84 Nash, who won a valuable ally in fellow Dayton resident Robert Pollard, who released two of their albums (1997's Kings of Yeah and 1999's Band for Hire) on his Rockathon Records label and hired them as an opening act for his band Guided by Voices.

Nice to see some EC love around here. His run of work from 1977-1991 is incredible. I had a very brief summer job working concert security at Canada's Wonderland. By FAR the highlight of that job was standing a few feet away from Elvis & his then wife Cait O'Riorden (from Pogues) near a backstage door as they took in opening act The Replacements! I hated the job and cleaned out my locker after the show and resigned the next day as I knew it could never be better than that.

I've not yet listened to the song, but have no doubt that the cover is better than the original.

ETA: After listening, I'm just not a huge fan of this song, but have to say that this cover is definitely better than the original.
Beck slays it on the guitar solo
Proving that even the greats can only do so much with shlocky material. But yeah, the guitar player shreds. Then there's this:

Before ALL OF THIS Connections needed…

Cool Change.

Then ALL OF THIS happened, things slowed down, things got weird, the world split in half, things like this should never happen. Now more than ever we need…

Cool Change.

Before Cool Change, Connections’ long history is storied. From the North Dayton suburbs, J.P. Herrmann, along with songwriter Andy Hampel and vocalist Kevin Elliott, helmed the late-90s outfit 84 Nash for an equally long run. As the first band signed to Robert Pollard’s Rockathon Records, 84 Nash existed alongside Ohio rock royalty, in bands like GBV, the Breeders, and Brainiac. In migrating to Columbus, they absorbed that city’s deep lineage and slightly skewed counterculture – from Gaunt and V-3, to the weirdos in charge, namely Mike Rep and Ron House. Nash broke up, took a break, but after that respite, Hampel and Elliott created Connections with Times New Viking’s Adam Elliott on drums, and bassist Philip Kim.

Along the way, they evolved, soon adding two other Columbus vets, drummer Michael P. O’Shaughnessy and guitarist Dave... more
