I’m with Patterson. I’ve loved her last couple albums, but I might like this the most. I would normally find this kind of vocal intonation grating, but her melodies are killer and the band on this one is aces.

I kid you not, old man. I recognize that she's talented but the music (her voice?) just grates on me. Problem is, Randi likes the record a lot so I will be hearing it whether I want to or not. And honestly, that's OK with me.*

*My wife's musical taste is actually really good. Among others, she absolutely adores anything by Isbell (and now Waxahatchee's new one). As I frequently say, if your wife is gonna make you listen to stuff and drag you to shows, you could do a LOT worse than Jason Isbell (and Waxahatchee).

I was actually commenting on the"snoooooze" adjective. If you're not hearing it, that's valid. But it's by no means a snoozer

Beyonce' - Cowboy Carter

I suppose calling a Beyonce' album overhyped is kind of redundant, but that doesn't make it untrue. It's good but it's not that good. And it's a little bit country but it sure isn't a "country album." That's neither diss nor praise, just fact. I'd say that if there's a theme here it's "don't box me in with any genre labels."

Biggest disappointment is not the lack of country music on her country album, it's her performance of "Blackbird." When I first heard that she covered this on the album I was excited; it seemed like the perfect match of artist and material and I expected her to make the song her own. Her version is nice but nothing special and certainly not any kind of statement or planting of a flag.

My favorite cuts so far are "Protector," "Bodyguard," "Jolene," "Alliigator Tears"* and "Texas Hold 'Em."

Agree with most of this. As for Blackbird, it's a pretty basic tune and song. If you stay faithful to the original, which Bey does, I think it's kinda hard to screw it up. I'm still working my way through Cowboy Carter but I give it a big thumbs up so far, it's definitely not a snoozer. ;)

To be clear, I don't think she screwed it up at all. I was just hoping she would do more of a personal interpretation along the lines of any great cover like the Queen's 'Respect" or Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares to You."

I had a chance to listen to most of Cowboy Carter yesterday and my conclusion is... meh. It's definitely well thought out and executed if you're a Bey ;) fan but to me the music and songs just didn't pull me in. Which is not a surprise given the type of music I gravitate to. Not sure what I was thinking yesterday morning (maybe I had too much coffee?) that caused my over exuberance.

Now let's get it back into the wheelhouse. NP:
