Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Hmmmmm. Some of this is good but overall meh. Definitely not the second coming of the Messiah. Main complaint: the production sounds way too modern for a bunch of 80 year olds. Also, Mick's lyrics are on the juvenile side again for the most part. I'm glad they put out something but I don't see myself listening to it much.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
The Rolling Stones - Hackney Diamonds - Pretty decent; pretty amazing actually if you consider it on an age adjusted basis. But the question is, if you're in the mood to listen to the Stones, would you ever put this one on? I suspect the answer is "no" for the vast majority.*
Lady Gaga worked hard but sorry to say she's no Claudia Lennear** or Merry Clayton. Or Lisa Fischer for that matter.
*Spotify fed me "Dead Flowers" as soon as the new album ended and the difference is obvious within the first few seconds. Familiarity is surely a part of it, but I think a lot more of it is the quality of the music and how urgent it is. And that's for a ballad. Do I dare say that part of it is Charlie? I think it would be absurd to say so on the basis of the first few seconds, but by the end of the song, yeah, maybe.
**Claudia Lennear is a member of the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Who knew?

The spiritual sequel to Dante Carfagna's landmark Black rock mix tape Chains and Black Exhaust, this 13 track compilation exhumes forgotten brilliance from the Afroamerican underground of the 1970s. Awash in fuzzed-out guitars, wah-wah pedals, lysergic-soaked grooves, and enough inflation depression to fill the tank of a shag wagon, If There’s Hell Below imagines a world where Hendrix lived and Funkadelic never crawled out of the garage.

I picked up Tickets for Doomsday on vinyl for RSD a while back. Haven’t listened to the first one, though. My first real dive into Circus Devils. I’m enjoying it.
Also plan on listening to the new Flatland Cavalry and Mountain Goats records this weekend.

The Circus Devils are typically all over the place and are the last side project I would recommend if one were looking to dip their toe in the Pollard pool. That said, they are great and the new record is fuckin' awesome! It's a bit more accessible than the vast majority of CD albums. It also came out of nowhere, as Pollard seemed focused on the latest incarnation of GBV and it appeared his collaborations with Todd Tobias were a thing of the past. Thankfully, that is not the case.

This one has blown me away. So damn good. There aren't many power pop songs better than "Little Rage."
