What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Inspired by the new Natural Child (one listen, pretty good), I tried to tee up Moby Grape's first album on Spotify. I don't know how these rights things work, but for whatever reason, some tracks are not available so I'm sort of listening to that album, lol. It occurred to me that I can't recall them being mentioned much around here and I think they're a good fit with the general 3dd sensibility so I'm curious: Are most folks familiar or do I need to give them a boost?

I have not heard that collab (but will check it out) but I can say w/ absolute confidence the answer is no. Generally filed under "late 60's psychedelia," they're a lot more than that including country, classic rock, blues, folk-rock, harmonies and more. Definitely SF scene but also bits of Gram Parsons, Buffalo Springfield and more, including all members being excellent players. Their self titled debut album is the one to own/listen to. Key tracks include "Omaha" and "Hey Grandma." The legend is that they failed because they were so overhyped (their label simultaneously released every track* as a single back when singles mattered).

*AMG says 5 tracks but I've always heard the story as "all."

Needs more Skip Spence (the American Syd Barrett?) ;)

As far as I know that first album has plenty of Skip Spence. Am I mistaken?

PS The Syd Barrett comparison seems very much apropos.

Man talk about great pimpin' battles! We've got Team Bubba/Moby Grape vs Team Clams/Shakira. Just based on the photos, I'm not sure how anyone can be with Bubba here. Plus when it comes to total records sold, I think Shakira wins by like 96 million to 1,436.

Reclusive Santa Cruz Old Growth giants MAMMATUS return with Expanding Majesty, a masterwork of heavy music 8 years in the making.

A 69 minute magnum opus of kaleidoscopic guitars, soaring analog synths, wall-of-amps fuzz bass and 100ft drums. 4 side-long pieces of cosmic flight and sub-surface thunder take the listener deep into the band's unique vision of this world and beyond.
Yo, dime....

Wow, this brings back some memories. My first concert was Elton when he was touring this & Rock of the Westies. I saw him a few times over the years but skipped the farewell tour. Last time I saw him was in Vegas (I was there seeing the Stones) doing the Million Dollar Piano. Great show, Elton's voice was kind of shot but he told a lot of stories between songs which was great.
