What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

I usually spend Saturday mornings hopping around the new releases. Frankly, I'm usually out after a minute or two if it doesn't catch my ear. This was a band I've never clicked with. Two years cooped up under the pandemic has put me in a different mindset when I sit down to listen. I put this one on and something in the music grabbed me. Damned if I didn't listen to the whole 80 minutes. Really good spatial arrangement of the instruments in the mix creating a wide and pleasing sound stage. Not a banger by any stretch of the imagination. From the less is more school. Her voice (for what it's worth) registers with me. Lyrics are hipster cool but do create images. Fuck if I know what she's singing about. YMMV. NB--The vinyl was mastered separately from the stream/cd version. Sounds really nice
So I listened to the Big Thief record the other night and had the opposite reaction. I thought it was just OK. There doesn't seem to be much that distinguishes it from a lot of the other indie bands that I check out.
I'm kinda in the middle based on one complete listen, which is not enough. Musically, I find it "nice" (pleasant but not challenging) but very same-y over 80 minutes in part because of the less is more thing that jonicont points out. The lyrics seem interesting but I agree w/ Clams not immediately distinguishable from other stuff out there. Not a lot of hooks, but am I dating myself by thinking that hooks are a good thing? Would have loved to experience that immediate click thing but it just wasn't there for me. Worth another listen but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it.

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You Apparently the band is from the Fiona Apple school of album naming.

Unless I've missed it, there hasn't been much if any interest in this album here but the music press is going wild over it. Pitchfork gives it a nine and Stephen Hyden says it's an outright 10. Although AMG comes in at a less than compelling 3.5. I'm about halfway through my first listen and I'm not hearing 10, but I am reserving judgment.
Jonicont posted the album on the previous page and I commented on how that album is receiving a good amount of critical buzz. These days that is about as much interest as you'll find on 3DD.

Pretty ambitious record with twenty tracks clocking in at an hour and twenty minutes. It was hovering around 60 degrees today, so I went for an hour walk and listened to it. It's an enjoyable record. At it's core it's more of a sparse, (dare I say) Americana album, with touches of dream pop/shoegaze in there. Influences I hear include, but aren't limited to, The Band, Neko Case and Slowdive. I can see myself going back to this. Appreciate the response, Jonicont.

Also agree that the new Spoon record is good.

I agree wholeheartedly! Going to grab the vinyl and its predecessor (the collab record, the name of which escapes me at the moment). Will they be touring this on these shores?

Sadly, it sure doesn't look like the farewell tour is going to play outside of Australia. I got real lucky in 2016 & scored front row for the show in Seattle. It was unreal good & they actually played a request from me (!). I had sent an email to their management. I was/am real into these guys. Got to meet them once & they were cool. Very down to earth. DBT related: I know for a fact that Patterson loves this band. Can't really say how I know this but it's true.

I saw them, twice, when they toured Canada with the Hip doing the Another Roadside Attraction festival tour in the early nineties. Powerful in every sense of the word. Lost track of them after Earth Sun & Moon (love that album), but rekindled my obsession when videos from the Mararrata Project started popping up on Youtube - those collaborations are mystical, really. Rising Seas and now this album. I truly regret being oblivious of their 2017 North American tour. So glad you got to see them, and to have that chance to meet them. They've always been true to themselves!
