I left Spotify playing over night in my office and walked in to this cover of "Redneck Friend" this morning. I don't understand why that song never became a staple cover of the alt-country scene. Maybe it did and I missed it.

For me, this album easily has the highest contrast between good and not good songs of any DBT album. Some really, really great stuff, coupled with some of my least favorite stuffcortez the killer wrote:

I watched the ZZ Top Netflix doc the other day, and have a bunch of those early songs stuck in my head.
And if we're choosing between the tables in the respective gatefolds, I'm going ZZ Top. But Natty Chile's looks good too.

If they had dropped Flying Wallendas and Eyes Like Glue for Girls Who Smoke and Strutter, it would stand alongside anything outside the Holy Trinity.Zip City wrote:For me, this album easily has the highest contrast between good and not good songs of any DBT album. I assume you are pretending the Shonna songs don’t exist.Iowan wrote:If they had dropped Flying Wallendas and Eyes Like Glue for Girls Who Smoke and Strutter, it would stand alongside anything outside the Holy Trinity.Zip City wrote:For me, this album easily has the highest contrast between good and not good songs of any DBT album. I actually like those two Shonna songs. You Got Another in particular.cortez the killer wrote:I assume you are pretending the Shonna songs don’t exist.Iowan wrote:

But it would make for a stronger album to move those as B-sides. That leaves you with the following track list:
Daddy Learned to Fly
4th Night
Birthday Boy
Charlie
Wig
This Fucking Job
Downtown
Scene
Santa Fe
Girls Who Smoke
Strutter
The more I think about it, I'd drop Strutter to the B-sides record. It's fun as hell, but a DBT album doesn't need a cover on it. You would have a 10 song, lean, tight, rocking LP. Light on Cooley, but Patterson had some really good stuff at this juncture.

"Forgot About Nashville" is "Welfare Music".

I don’t know, man. I think you were right the first time. No idea why they would include Eyes Like Glue and Flying Wallendas instead of Strutter and GWS. The first two are two of my least favorite DBT songs and from what I hear from other people that’s pretty common among fans. And the other two are so dang good. Those years were kind of an odd time for the band to me.Iowan wrote:I actually like those two Shonna songs. I’m pretty sure I’ve only seen Flying Wallendas performed live once. And I know for a fact that I’ve never seen Eyes Like Glue played at a show. They must not think much of those songs either.

I like Wallendas, and it would be a good choice to close the record. But paired with Eyes Like Glue, the album ends twice

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
"Supergroup" (using the term loosely) of younger Texas guys. Really good. I don't care for Josh Abbot (extremely by-numbers bro-country adjacent standard Red Dirt shit), and William Clark Green veers into that same territory as well, but Cleto Cordero (Flatland Cavalry) and John Baumann are really fucking good songwriters. This album is a love letter to flat, barren, windmill and farm filled west Texas which sounds awfully similar to flat, (less) barren, windmill and farm filled north Iowa. I can relate.
Bovine and Clams - it's in the wheelhouse.
