Great choice for today. The current weather on the northern Plains resembles that album cover, big time.

This was the first "alt country" album I ever loved, and I didn't even know it at the time. My old man got this shortly after it came out, and it was a go-to on any road trip over the rest of my childhood. I know every hook on it instinctively. If you're talking about music that accurately reflects it's surroundings, this is high on the list. To me, more than anything else, this is what the northern Plains/Midwest sounds like. This is the sound of wide open, empty spaces where the wind howls incessantly. Where people are tough, but polite and optimistic.

I shelved it by the time I got into high school and entered a rabbit hole that wound through punk, frat boy white guy reggae, and jam bands before spitting me out into a classic rock spot that eventually lead to a full blown immersion into alt-country/Americana when I bought ABAAC on a whim (I had made pit stops in the course of Whiskeytown and Old 97's on the way). This one (and their whole catalog really) has re-entered semi-regular rotation over the past decade, and is probably a contender for my personal Top 20 albums of all time.
