What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Courtesy of emandrisdad, who gave me this tip over a month ago. Shame on me for just getting to it.

This is I Was a King by I Was A King. First class power pop out of Norway of all places. Rolank, any info?

As emandrisdad noted, a strong Teenage Fanclub vibe; I'm also hearing some Acid House Kings. Needless to say, that's strong praise from both of us.

OT1H, nothing revelatory, "just" in the pocket power pop. OTOH, it has that fresh, joyful sound that makes power pop fun.

And just for the record, so to speak, it pisses me off that so many Norwegians speak English so perfectly when I can't master more than a phrase or 2 in any language. Some would say including English.
A music collective of some sorts is perhaps a fitting description. Anne Lise Frøkedal - vocal/guitars also does solo work as well as member of Harry´s Gym and some other smaller projects. To my understanding the key member of the band though is a guy called Frode Stømstad. A couple of years back he was in another loose constellation called The No Ones with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey - somehow there is a link to the Baseball Project/Minus 5 - which I have no clue how came about other than the link to a tiny festival of some sorts called Sun Station taking place way up north in a small town called Vadsø where also people like Steve Wynn, Howe Gelb and John Paul Jones are "regular" participants.

I was a king released their latest album - Slow Century - earlier this year. Pretty good.

Brighter Than Creation's Dark while I worked in my yard this morning. First listen in a long time. Cooley has so many good songs that he never plays. Shonna's backing vocals on that album were fantastic. God bless Patterson Hood for writing The Man I Shot.

Also listened to A Blessing And A Curse. As far as I know Iowan is the only one here who shares my fondness for it but I love it.

Blessing and a Curse falls at number 6 on my DBT album ranking system. Number 5 if you don’t count AAW.

Yeah, they're on my to-buy list. Haven't been able to preview much, but what I've heard is pretty jaw-dropping and lives up to all the hype (which I have to admit, surprised me).
What's your take? What I've heard sounds like The Fall meets Gang of Four meets Sonic Youth meets John Zorn in the 21st century.

WARA from the NBHD radio on Spotify. Got hooked on their record Kidnapped after Bitter Southerner ranked it higher than English Oceans that year. This hip hillbilly is loving that station.

Yeah, I definitely hear those classic post-punk influences on their sound. I didn't hear much of the pre-album hype you speak of. I've seen the album praised in some of the places I frequent and gave it a listen. I need to dig deeper to get a more coherent opinion, but I did think it would be up your alley.

I need to listen again. I mostly had it on as background music.
