Leak?
It is. I rarely give into the temptation of leaks but in this case I made an exception, particularly after reading
this review of the record by Raleigh
News & Observer music scribe David Menconi (who also penned a book on Ryan a few years ago for the University of Texas Press American Music Series). I have only listened once. While not quite as enthralled as Menconi, I will say the record does have a pervading vibe that hearkens back to
Love Is Hell. To my ears, aside from the opening track (which stands out like a sore thumb and sounds like it would have fit perfectly on Ryan's self-titled record from 2014), the remainder of the album has a certain sameness to it. Perhaps that will change upon repeated listenings.
I love it. Probably one of my favorite debut records of the past couple decades (hard to believe the album is nearly 17 years old now). It first came to my attention thanks to a friend that started an NC-centric email list in the late 90's called Guitartown that's mainly devoted to alt.country. Being a huge Son Volt fan, she was initially drawn to this record due to the presence of Dave Boquist. His fiddle playing aside,
Normal For Bridgwater stands on it's own merits.
