Lyrically, in their type of music, there are very few writers I think come close.

Amen, Smitty. Plus their song structure is consistently surprising. It's not just the usual verse, verse, chorus, etc. It's just so challenging and interesting. And when you combine the lyrics, well.... There are lots of bands that I love that I only have a cursory knowledge of the lyrics. Not our boys though. They speak to me lyrically like no other. Rock on.

His songs are deceptively deep and clever; no one today is quite as good at what he does as he is. Don't let the humor fool ya; I bet it's harder to write a funny song with meaning than it is a serious one.

Evan Felker is damn near that tier these days. "The Bird Hunters" is devastating, and he's openly admitted a heavy McMurtry influence.

Yup. Every Todd song has a moment where you get the joke and realize he's operating 10 levels deeper than you.
