Five Eight show from Homecoming.

*This sounds so good after just seeing Old 97's live for the first time. Cooley and Patterson write circles around Rhett. Just my true opinion :lol:

Don't go comparing other writers.to Hood/Cooley or it's bound to hinder your enjoyment of other bands.
Lyrically, in their type of music, there are very few writers I think come close.

Amen, Smitty. Plus their song structure is consistently surprising. It's not just the usual verse, verse, chorus, etc. It's just so challenging and interesting. And when you combine the lyrics, well.... There are lots of bands that I love that I only have a cursory knowledge of the lyrics. Not our boys though. They speak to me lyrically like no other. Rock on.

McMurtry and Snider are about it.

Definitely McMurtry. Not sure about Snider. I'd add Lucinda Williams and Isbell too.

Snider, McMurtry, Isbell, Lucinda, Vlautin;
slightly below you got Robert Ellis, John Moreland, Joey Kneiser, Kathleen Edwards, Daniel Hutchens

I wouldn't put Willie Vlautin up there. He's strong lyrically but IMO he doesn't make the cut on a musical level.

I would in a heartbeat. I also saw your hesitancy to put Snider up there, but I believe he absolutely is. His songs are deceptively deep and clever; no one today is quite as good at what he does as he is. Don't let the humor fool ya; I bet it's harder to write a funny song with meaning than it is a serious one.

Evan Felker is damn near that tier these days. "The Bird Hunters" is devastating, and he's openly admitted a heavy McMurtry influence.

I'd put him ahead of John Moreland in terms of Okie songsmiths.

Yup. Every Todd song has a moment where you get the joke and realize he's operating 10 levels deeper than you.
