Shakespeare's recent listenings to Love It to Death and Easy Action inspired me to get back to my roots.NP:

Whenever I try to explain the concept of power pop to someone, I just put the title track on. Ripping guitar leads, sugary sweet melodies/vocals.3milelake wrote:+1Iowan wrote:

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
No doubt! I looked back through old threads to see if I had "discovered" ( ) this guy, and sure enough, Smitty and Kudzu have been singing TR's praises for several years.Smitty wrote:You didn't listen to me (atleast for the past ten or so)ramonz wrote:Terry Reid - holy shit, how did I miss this guy all these years?????
I really can't believe I don't know this guy. Got to him from Spotify today - David Crosby similar artists. I am going to buy a bunch of his shit tonight. Even his new live album is fantastic. His voice has changed a lot (he sounds like Keif now), but love the progression. Early stuff is rockin' (Smitty or KG noted that he was the original choice for Zeppelin's singer) and later stuff is more mellow. Both are fantastic.
Take it from Smitty and KG - check out Terry Reid.

The road has been good to this band and they put together a strong set of tunes. I love the way this record sounds. All warm and fuzzy. Kinda mellow 70's AM radio, kinda country rock and a little jammy.

1st listen New Alabama Shakes.
I almost tapped out on the first song! Not digging this and don't know if I have the patience to let it grow on me.

This album is fucking incredible. And this comes from a guy who thought the first record was a well executed (yet utterly predictable) soul/r&b album.TW_2.0 wrote:

Seriously, this new record has completely clobbered me. It's next level. It's like they tossed out all their soul records and listened to nothing but TV on the Radio, The Roots, My Morning Jacket and St. Vincent or something.
Holy shit, guys

I dig it too. It didn't blow my mind or anything but I definitely think it's better than their last album.Zip City wrote:This album is fucking incredible. And this comes from a guy who thought the first record was a well executed (yet utterly predictable) soul/r&b album.TW_2.0 wrote:

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Second listen happening now. I don't dislike it but the overwhelming love, from you and a lot of other people, is eluding me. Matt Patton said it was the best record out of Alabama in 20 years. Idk. What I liked about them originally was that they were this little soul/garage band that could and were playing a style of music that hadn't been done well in 30 years. It wasn't innovative but, to me, the best music being made today isn't innovative it's just honest and good in whatever style is chosen. So far I really like Don't Wanna Fight (which I hated when I fist heard it), Gimme All Your Love, This Feeling and Miss You. The only song I really don't like is Future People. So, yeah I like the record but I was hoping for a second record from that garage/soul band that was so infectious. I thought the first record was a nice first effort but it was poorly recorded and very raw. i wanted tehm to get better as a band and get some professional engineers working on refining, not necessarily changing, their sound. For this record they just decided they wanted to be something else and that's OK. Maybe the traditional soul thing will be all about St. Paul and the Broken Bones going forward.Zip City wrote:This album is fucking incredible. We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved
Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
The reason I like it is because it's NOT a traditional soul record. They really pushed themselves into new territory, which is far more exciting

John Moreland will never be properly appreciated in his lifetime. This guy is just something else.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Different strokes I guess. Again, I don't dislike it I just liked what they were a lot. Nobody had made that kind of music in a long time and they showed a lot of promise towards it. Still have some elements of it but it's broader now. Shit, maybe I'll love it in a month. Time will tell.Zip City wrote:The reason I like it is because it's NOT a traditional soul record. Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I listened to this album 4 or 5 times while at work when it first came out and I thought it was pretty good, listenable. But, I decided to take it out for a run this morning and I realized that it is a great album. Not sure why it took so long to click. Favorite tracks are By God, 15 Years, Gasoline and Black Gold, but the whole album is solid.
