What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

The haters can go fuck themselves. This ain't Gentlemen, Black Love, or 1965. What this is is an amazing record from a semi-legendary band from Cincinnati, OH. I was listening to Black Love yesterday and I was struck by the similarity in sound to The National. Considering the Cincinnati roots of both bands, it makes perfect sense. "Algiers" is a "Song of the Year" candidate.

Haters? Most of the reviews/thoughts I've seen of this have been at worst neutral, and at best very positive. I've not seen anything that could be classed as hateful. Have you got any examples?

Without the impaired judgement of 4 G'Night tallboys, perhaps fuck the whinny fucksticks would've been more appropriate/accurate. Afghan Whigs are obviously a far different band now than they were in the 1990's. Many of the reviews and comments regarding Do to the Beast want to hold this album to some impossible standard that no longer exists. After a few listens, I can say this is an excellent album and, while slightly different, it's great that the band (minus McCollum) is back together.

Like the man said, rode hard and put away wet
Throw away the bad news, and put it to rest
If learning is living, and the truth is a state of mind
You'll find it's better at the end of the line

Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye

Yep, definite violation. Add it to the playlist or suffer the consequences, Iowan.

My Jay Farrar/Son Volt best of would consist of about 40 songs. Tear Stained Eye would be in my top 10 though.

Fair do's.
However my problem, for want of a better description, is not with the quality of the album per se, it's the fact that this is being sold as an Afghan Whigs album when to all intents and purposes it's a Dulli record that just happens to have John Curley playing bass. Now I know that not every reunion has every original member present, and it could be argued that a drummer or perhaps a bass player could be missing and not materially affect the sound too much, but when somebody who was integral to a bands sound is missing (in this case Rick McCollum) that can be a problem. I love Greg Dulli and I think he is an upstanding guy whose integrity is not in doubt, and he is without question The Whigs main man, but while I do enjoy the record for what it is I can't help thinking "If only McCollum had been involved......" how much better it might have been and how it would have been so much more a real full blown Whigs album.

(Yeah I know I'm probably just too picky and should just enjoy it for what it is!!)
