What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Finishing up from last night.

This album is definitely a lot of fun. Hopefully Justin Vernon makes more stuff like it.

You have to be pretty jaded not to have fun with this. Typical tribute record, some great stuff, some crappy stuff and some that doesn't matter.

I absolutely love this record. I was playing a gig in Chicago in late 1990, it was late maybe 2:00 AM when I left the stage and some girl I barely new grabbed me and handed me the CD and told me that my life depended on listening to it. I had no idea what that meant then, or now and I never saw her again but I do owe her one. Love it.

I found this in the budget bin a few weeks back along with other finds from Mazzy Star (you know the one), Bruce Cockburn and NC band The Veldt. All good finds but MacDougal Blues was the real treasure as I've been meaning to pick it up for years. Many moons ago he toured in support of this album with Peter Buck. I hate I missed that tour (which came to Carrboro way back when) but that was during a time when I wasn't fond of traveling alone to concerts.

Here they are on 120 Minutes:

i saw that gig in baton rouge.

for me.....his shit runs deep and pure. punk rocker, migrant folky, head banging, riff ninja, sing along master of a stunning catalog. still releasing relevant records.

25+ years. similar career to chuck prophet with regard to everything, except for profit's crack addiction.

all hail, kevn kinney.

Yes, they do. At least according to this teaser from the new Drivin' n' Cryin' documentary in which Buck mentions his efforts to help Kevn kick the Peruvian marching powder.

I never wrote Drivin' n' Cryin' off but I guess I did stop paying attention there for a number of years. Ever since that second Tres Tangled Truckers show in Raleigh back in 2005 I starting pay closer attention again (I'd also say 2002's Broken Hearts and Auto Parts didn't slip by completely unnoticed). In recent years I've been picking up some more of his solo albums as well as some D n' C stuff here and there. Kevn knows no bounds as to who he works with whether it's Edwin McCain, Gibb Droll, Warren Haynes, Audley Freed or Jason Ross (Seven Mary Three). Some of those might not be considered "hip" names but thing is, Kevn doesn't really give a shit what people think.

A really pleasant surprise...always thought The Lost Weekend was a one off, but this '07 release is a quality, if not late follow up....different, but good...
