Wilco started as the alt country thing but then became more experimental rock..........Son Volt stayed very Uncle Tupelo like. I can see why one would like those two and not Wilco. I love all three. Wilco's title of America's Radiohead is pretty fair when one listens to Summerteeth,Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born in particular. I personally love Wilco the most of the three because of the changes and evolution they have made from the Uncle Tupelo days. That also has to do with other musicians coming in etc like jazz guitar virtuoso Nels Cline etc. I will say with Wilco.........I did not get it at first but as time and many albums have come through the years, I now get it fully. They are an amazing live band, a top 3 for me overall. The Whole Love had taken some time to get used to but this album more than any imo shows the overall picture of the band's evolution by showing all of the styles in their sound over the years. It is a good one to start with if you are not going to start from the beginning. It is also such an improvement from Wilco (the album), which imo was their only dud.

I remember when the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was being held back for what seemed like an indefinite amount of time, lots of my friends had copies (as people had recorded the stream and/or had bootlegs prior to Wilco streaming it) but I still refused to listen to it until it was officially released. I'll never forget giving it a spin for the first time on my way home from work on a very beautiful and clear day in April 2002. My other memories revolved around how it seemed to so uncannily capture all that happened on September 11, 2001. That part of the record would probably ring even more true to me if it had actually been released that day but as it stands that album for me will always be Dylan's Love and Theft. It came out on September 11 but I didn't listen to it (or any music) until the following weekend.

I hear it in how they added all the blips and bleeps to their sound circa Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The same way R.E.M. was compared to Radiohead circa the release of Up in the late 90's. Then again, those two bands were touring with each other a lot during that time period so perhaps that particular comparison wasn't so much of a stretch.

Wilco suck WAY less than Radiohead.

Uncle Tupelo rule though. I own a bunch of Wilco, Son Volt and UT stuff and I play the UT stuff a lot more than the other stuff. In fact I play more Son Volt (particularly wide swing tremolo, an album I really like) than Wilco. Wilco to me just hasnt got the balls of the earlier stuff. Mr Cortez will know what I was going to say next. I'm sure they're you know, nice people and all that, and people write good things about the live shows, but it just doesnt grab me, in particular the way UT did/does.

It must suck for Tweedy and Farrar though right? Whatever they do, whereever they go, people will always be comparing them to stuff they did when they were in their 20's.

I like that one too, but prefer the less is more approach on HIC. Not a single note wasted.

He's got the right idea.

Sky Blue Sky has one incredible song (Impossible Germany) and the rest of the album doesn't do much for me. Wilco (The Album) has about 5 decent songs. Nothing truly great, but I think its a smoother listen.

They're definitely at the bottom of the Wilco stack from me though.
