A buddy of mine who is a total WWCD clone was praising this show earlier to me this evening with a lot of your same comments. If he and you say it is good, I know it must be. Most of my familiarity with early '78 comes from that Uni-Dome Dicks Picks from Feb. and that Horton Hall show and Dave's Picks from April. Love all of those.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:all through that January 78 run northward through California Jerry dropped teases here and there of Close Encounters. Love it! Seriously though, not long after WWCD made his comeback appearance on 3DD I had to ask my friend (not on this board) if he was in fact WWCD. He laughed and denied it.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:No shit!LBRod wrote:That is a scary thought.211poundsofpork wrote: A buddy of mine who is a total WWCD clone

Re: Never Had Such A Good Time/The Grateful Dead Thread
that January 1978 tour is known for (1) having several shows early in the run with no Jerry vocals due to laryngitis and (2) having a stretch mid-tour that was in effect the Highway 99 tour, with them hitting Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento, and Stockton (of those valley cities, Sacramento was the only one they ever returned to again)

was such a gut punch, took this one really hard. While the band rallied in miraculous fashion and played stellar shows in the fall of 1990 and on through most of 1991, Brent's death started the slow, gradual downhill slide towards 1995
I really loved Brent, no hyperbole there, and his death shook me hard. Remember right where I was (near South Square Mall in Durham, NC, leaving work at Record Bar corporate HQ) when I heard the news, recall it like it was yesterday

I'm just going to come right out and say it. If you want to talk about an an amazing blues keyboard player and vocalist, I'll take Brent Mydland over Greg Allman any day of the fuckin' week. There, I said it.

I've posted this before but it's worth a repeat. Perhaps the single greatest one song performance I've seen from any act. Put the fear of Jerry into me. Such a sinister performance, and it doesn't hurt that it's from such a historic show. Was so fortunate to be there
the entire motherfuckin' band in Zeus mode on this one. They invite you to stare into the abyss...... but if you accept the invitation, you're on your own. Their job is to shed light.....

Aside from early 80's summer camp exposure in my cabin to the Dead, and the Touch of Grey video- I was totally oblivious at this point. I was still in full on heavy metal mode.

Re: Never Had Such A Good Time/The Grateful Dead Thread
I heard it on the radio as well. Back then it was extremely rare to hear GD on the radio, at least in the Triangle, so anytime I heard a GD song I braced myself for someone in the band having died. So when I heard a Brent song I immediately feared the worse and unfortunately was on the marksactochris wrote:I was at home and my girlfriend at the time called me from work and said she had heard about it on the radio.

So begins the Days Between.....
Riverport '94 was my last two shows. This is a new video for me, I've seen the Voodoonola clip, but really love this one. Days was certainly a highlight that night, and remains so. A song that has grown in it's meaning for me, and will probably continue to do so. Hunter/Garcia's last masterpiece. It's not the best live version, but it's damn good, and one I cherish having seen

Absolutely love the song, so musically different from other Hunter/Garcia tunes. The drone is much more like a Weir song. My favorite version is from my last show. It was so powerful I still have a hard time listening to it, it gives me chills. I couldn't find video of just the song from 5/21/95 but here's the entire second set. Pretty strong set, especially pre-drums

DeadBase 50 is half off on Amazon for a few days in honor of Jerry's 75th.
Finally gave me an excuse to grab a copy.
$45 for hardcover. Hard to beat.

I nerd out on this stuff as well. I had 4 different copies of the Pharmer's Almanac back in the day when that was around. Still have my dog-eared Deadbase Jr. I got back in '99 (pages falling out and taped back in - looks dreadful) and it really really comes in handy; not that it matters but it only has setlists up until spring '95 and not the last tour as I believe my edition came out in '95. May have to splurge on the hardcover you mentioned above.TW_2.0 wrote:DeadBase 50 is half off on Amazon for a few days in honor of Jerry's 75th.

Definitely worth the purchase, only wish I didn't pay full price. A Deadhead home is not complete unless it has a Deadbase.... or two211poundsofpork wrote:I nerd out on this stuff as well. Holly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five.
The past year has seen Holly expand her repertoire into the realm of the Grateful Dead, including an “Eyes of the World” based on the band’s spectacular exploratory June 18, 1974 performance at Freedom Hall. Using classical piano technique to reinterpret these jamband luminaries, Holly’s live performances infuse new with old, tradition with surreal, and creates a concert experience like nothing else in the music world.

Dark star crashes
pouring its light
into ashes
Reason tatters
the forces tear loose
from the axis
Searchlight casting
for faults in the
clouds of delusion
shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds
Mirror shatters
in formless reflections
of matter
Glass hand dissolving
to ice petal flowers
revolving
Lady in velvet
recedes
in the nights of goodbye
Shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds

Re: Never Had Such A Good Time/The Grateful Dead Thread
2 items worthy of note:DiamondDave wrote:This was just put on youtube on July 27th, but still, I can't believe I'm just finding it today.....
(1) absolutely love Stanley Jordan's performance (right after the moe section, IIRC) of the Alhambra section of Terrapin, which was played live only one time, Winterland 3/18/77
(2) the Holly Bowling section towards the end has the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in the background. This bridge played a role in the formation of this legendary part of the canon.......
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrapin_Station
Lyricist Robert Hunter wrote the "Terrapin Station Part 1" lyrics in a single sitting, during a rare Bay Area lightning storm. On the same day, driving across the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge, lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was struck by the idea for a singular melodic line. He turned his car around and hurried home to set it down in notation before it escaped him. Hunter said "When we met the next day, I showed him the words and he said, 'I've got the music.' They dovetailed perfectly and Terrapin edged into this dimension."
I think of this each and every time I drive over that rickety old bridge (which runs right beside San Quentin on the Marin Co. side) and it makes me smile
