Spill it, WWCD. What do you mean? I had no idea when I posted that how iconic a show that was - there was a whole book written about it, right??

It's a 100% legit show, there is just a totally crazy conspiracy theory out there that says it never happened, that it was all a CIA experiment

the conspiracy is widespread enough to get referenced in this meme (as seen on the previous page of this thread)

set 2 of this classic on its 33rd anniversary. One of the best shows I ever saw. They more than made up for the short (5 songs) second set from the night before in Columbia

32 years ago today, first post-coma GD show, and it's special as fuck. Chock full of emotional moments and crackles with energy. Standouts are the first ever Black Muddy River and a killer Playin in the Band

Gimme five, I'm still alive!

I was at party New Years Eve and telling a guy that they were playing a Dead show from New Year's Eve on the radio that night - 1977 I believe. He started telling me about a New years Eve show that was simulcast at the time where Kesey is trippin' balls and misunderstands that these paper mache heads of the Dead were FDR, Eric Clapton, Rasputin, etc. instead of members of the band.

The way he told it had me laughin' pretty hard. I found the show - it's 12/31/85. Here is a brief snippet (Midnight Countdown) of Kesey going off. https://archive.org/details/gd85-12-31. ... ad1t09.shn

Anyone know where there is audio or video of more of this rant?

Gracias.

It's a representation of the USS Merrimack!!!

I've posted about this here before. It's simply one of my all-time favorite "things," period! It's such a thing in this house that even my wife, who isn't a huge Deadhead, can quote big parts of Kesey's brilliance. Words simply do not suffice

Make sure to watch the whole thing

How The Grateful Dead Remain Relevant In 2019

So what makes the Grateful Dead’s words glow with the gold of sunshine? How does a band formed over 50 years ago remain not only relevant today, but influential?

This episode explains. And while you listen, read on to hear what fans, new and old, have to say.

FYI - the program is different than the text, mostly. They interview, in a roundtable fashion, Dead archivist David Lemieux and pianist Holly Bowling (of whom I am a big fan) among others.

The Brilliant Uncertainty of the Grateful Dead’s ‘Dark Star’

And it was 50 years ago today — Feb. 27, 1969 — that Garcia and the Grateful Dead stood onstage at the Fillmore West and recorded the live version of “Dark Star,” a song that is still about as fun, and as weird, as American rock ’n’ roll can be.

this version was recorded on my 3rd birthday. That run of shows is about as essential psychedelic era GD as there is

25 years ago today- February 27, 1994. Only time I saw them on my birthday and I was *this* close to getting a breakout for the ages as a present  We were going crazy, but it didn't last. Nonetheless, it's a ripping Wharf Rat, especially for 94, with lots of guitar nastiness

it was by no means an epic show, but the Chinese New Years Parade was spectacular, and there were a few standouts besides the Charlie tease: a smoking Uncle John's Band, one of the most psychedelic I ever saw, complete with a Supplication jam, and a sweet Rain encore

Kind of the cosmic joke, and so par for the course with this band, that the only show I saw on my birthday had Easy Answers and Corrina :o

Today is the 50th anniversary of one of my favorite shows ever, absolutely essential GD

just a stunning display of psychedelic era Grateful Dead at their finest. This is from the legendary run that resulted in the classic Live Dead album. This show is a "desert island" show for me and is perhaps the finest example of this era of the band. It absolutely blows my mind when I think about how in less than a year from this show they had moved from this style of play towards the Americana-era Dead, with emphasis on the shorter songs to come from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. It's hard to believe they were the same band, the shift was that dramatic.

I could wax forever on this but I'll shut up, just click the link (assuming you don't have the box set) and dig into one spectacular night of music

28 years ago today. It was Easter Sunday. my wife's first show, and it was spectacular, as was the next night as well

This is one for the ages. Hands down one of my very favorite single song performances that I ever saw them do. The band, or Dick Latvala to be precise, agreed, as they saw fit to include this Eyes (as well as the Samson that preceded it) as filler on Dick's Picks #17

fuck it, here's the whole incredible show
