Cover Songs

So that I don't have to preface every comment with "not necessarily better than..." as I've found myself having to do in the other cover songs thread, I decided to start a thread just for cover songs. Plus, in this case, I have never even heard the original so I have no idea if it's better or not. I just know that I like it and I hope that y'all will too.

This is the Gourds covering Grin's "Everybody's Missing the Sun". I never even knew this was a cover until someone pointed it out to me. I had also never heard of Grin. For those that are unfamiliar with them, it was a band formed by Nils Lofgren in 1971. They dissolved in '74.

I had the good fortune to see Whiskeytown do that at one of their reunion shows at the Lakeside Lounge (now Slim's) in Raleigh back in 2000 but only after a heckler kept hollering at Ryan Adams, demanding that Whiskeytown play "something we know". Prior to playing "Dreams" Ryan made up a song on the spot directed at the "gay guy wearing the poncho". He shut the fuck up after that and the "Dreams" cover.

Great story, Kudzu.

Another cool cover (well not really with Levon on drums)

Cool cover. Grin played @ my high school in '74. It was during classes & it was fantastic. White Lies was a big hit in D.C. Their 1st album, which 'Everybody's Missin' The Sun' is on, has a bunch of great songs.

I love covers.

Apparently they did an unmiked version of "Long, Black Veil" last night in Winston-Salem as their final encore. Even though they just played Raleigh Wednesday night I won't be seeing them until the WinocaFest in Wilmington on the 27th. My niece bought me a ticket for my birthday so it was kinda hard to turn down.

Just goes to show how good they were at making other people's songs their own. Same for their versions of "Crossroads" and "T For Texas". Especially "T For Texas".

Chip Robinson (ex-Backsliders) covers Ryan Adams last night at a post wedding celebration that also included Tres Chicas, the Small Ponds, Mic Harrison & the High Score and possibly the last performance ever from Patty Hurst Shifter. Evidently Chip learned this on the way to the Pour House last night as a special request from the newlyweds.

David Rawlings Machine covering Ryan Adams. In a way, it's not really a cover since Dave and Gillian actually play on the original, it's just that this version doesn't include Ryan.
