Re: Cover Songs
On the one hand, it doesn't have the majesty of the original; on the other hand, it's much more obvious what a good song this is played acoustic. I still prefer the original, but this is a damned good cover:
Another cover of a Seattle song that shows what a wonderful tune it is. This is the version that got me singing this to the kid for a bedtime song:

Re: Cover Songs
Words I never thought I'd say: I want this Shaun Cassidy record?
Okay, the one I really want is the one these wild covers are from, the aptly ironically named Wasp.
I don't just want it because it's Rundgren and Utopia, though that got me to buy a Foreigner record. I want it because it ranges from pretty good to pretty great. Or so I think. I report, you decide:

I was about to mock you ceaselessly, then I listened to "Once Bitten Twice Shy". Please don't ever bring this up again.John A Arkansawyer wrote:Words I never thought I'd say: I want this Shaun Cassidy record?

Re: Cover Songs
That one does suck for quite a ways in, but at the end, it's a pretty good guitar rave up. It helps that I don't have a youthful investment in that song. But the covers of "The Book I Read" and "So Sad About Us" are really good covers. In particular, "The Book I Read" sounds a lot like the records Bowie made a couple of years later. Whether you like Modern Love and Let's Dance or not (I do), anticipating their sound is pretty impressive.Flea wrote:I was about to mock you ceaselessly, then I listened to "Once Bitten Twice Shy". Re: Cover Songs
I realize this might be sacrilege, but I think this is better than the Johnny Cash version:

Re: Cover Songs
Played this for the first time in years; had forgotten how great this cover is:

Would it be too strong to call this remarkable? I don't think so:

The Google Gods were giving and gracious today! This was next up. I can see Laura Nyro in that dress. Can't you?

Re: Cover Songs
Did I just have low expectations? Or does this actually not suck?
I like it like I like Del McCoury's "'52 Vincent Black Lightning"--a very refreshing alternative to the original, which I nonetheless still prefer.

Re: Cover Songs
I've spent more time than is good for me mocking Deadheads if I'm as surprised as I am at how good this is.
Jerry's singing over those great back-ups is so right for this song, even, maybe especially when he mumbles, and I love what the bassist is doing.

I always felt that Jerry never was able to summon up the appropriate level of “spook” to do this classic the full justice it demandsJohn A Arkansawyer wrote:I've spent more time than is good for me mocking Deadheads if I'm as surprised as I am at how good this is.

I was impressed more by the first song--she's been listening to Neko Case, I think--but this was good, too:

My wife and I agreed that (1) we find her voice to be ungodly contrived and (2) this version was blasphemousJohn A Arkansawyer wrote:I was impressed more by the first song--she's been listening to Neko Case, I think--but this was good, too:

Here. Have instead the vocal stylings of Theresa May singing new lyrics to an old Stevie Wonder song:whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:My wife and I agreed that (1) we find her voice to be ungodly contrived and (2) this version was blasphemousJohn A Arkansawyer wrote:I was impressed more by the first song--she's been listening to Neko Case, I think--but this was good, too:
