when i die put my bones in an empty street to remind me of how it used to be
don't write my name on a stone bring a coleman lantern and a radio
cleveland game and two fishing poles and watch with me from the shore
ghostly steel and iron ore ships coming home
where i am paralyzed by the emptiness

That show was July 2009 and I remember it like it was yesterday. Fucking stunningly amazing shit. I mean - just jaw-dropping and spectacularly phenomenal live rock 'n' roll. I cannot fathom that Molina is gone. So sad.

This blows. I only have "What Comes After the Blues", but I love that album.

I guess this might prompt me to dig further into his work, but too little too late I guess. What a shame.

born to give it away
born to give it away
i'll take to my grave
no heart at all

i find a new kind every day
i find a new kind every day
i will find in my grave
no new pain

it was easy making myself the same
it was easy making myself less
but to get better
that's the hardest one yet

it's only the moon that's broke
it's not your heart
it's only the moon that's broke
it's not your heart
let the night in, baby
not the dark

born to give it away
born to give it away
i will take to my grave
no heart at all
In my blood, there's gasoline..

Riding With The Ghost

While you was gone you must have done a lot of favors
You've got a whole lot of things I don't think
That you could ever have paid for
While you've been busy crying
About my past mistakes
I've been busy trying to make a change
I made a change
I've been riding with the ghost
I've been doing whatever he told me
I've been looking door to door to see
if there was someone who'd hold me
I never met a single one who didn't see through me
None of them could love me if they thought they might lose me
Unless I made a change
See I ain't getting better. I am only getting behind
I am standing on a crossroad trying to make up my mind
I'm trying to remember how it got so late
Why every night pain comes from a different place
Now something's got to change
I put my foot to the floor
To make up for the miles I've been losing
See I'm running out of things
I didn't even know I was using
And while you've been busy
Learning how to complain
I've been busy learning
How to make a change
I made it (almost) (again)

i guess he couldn't make that change.

i did not know jason molina, personally.
but by listening to his music, i feel as if i did.
sometimes, i feel like he may have known me.

i can't put put my finger on it, but i am on the verge of tears. i feel gutted. sucker punched.

two sides /one coin.
great guy, talented, kind, witty./ battling demons only he knew with alcohol in amounts those around him knew too well.
the thirst he had to quiet the pain, demons, struggles he must have had was
devastatingly, finally, quenched with the poison that would kill him.
his head, heart, spirit, kidneys, liver.

since the johnson/molina album and then cancelled tour, i followed his struggle.
i prayed and hoped and wanted his "recovery" so badly.
i wished for him to be healthy and happy and well.
selfishly, i wanted him to write more and play out more, so i could get to be a part of it.
i ached for his close family and friends who had to be there ,as a part of it, and watch it continue to unravel.

that coin was spinning so quickly, then with an unsteady wobble, for so long.
i wanted to see it land heads up and continue on. beating the beast.
but alas, it slipped into a tailspin and now there is only quiet.
no more work from mr. molina.
he is gone now.
now, i pray for those who are left. those who fought in the trenches with him.
i will miss what was not to be written.

but i will play his music often and be grateful for what he did share.

i don't really have anything to say. nothing important really.
but when i read about his passing, oddly, i thought to log on here and remember how i was introduced to him here.
how i analyzed and adored his work and lyrics.
how josephine was, and is, a masterpiece.
the time i was able to talk to him and not sound like a star struck fan.
how i told him i thought he was a great writer and i was so happy i came to know his work.
he was shy and humble and gracious.

i never really knew jason molina, personally.
but the world is a better place by what he left behind.

Originally, I bought Sojourner digitally, but the DVD wasn't included. At the time, the physical box set was out or print. Luckily, it was made available again last year and I was able to get it.

I had the opportunity to chat with Jason for a few minutes a few years ago after a gig in Salt Lake and he was very gracious and humble. Sad day for MEC fans and the Molina family.

There's a really well-written piece on Jason and his passing now up on NPR.

I really like this comment from "Comment" section (which can typically be a trainwreck).

Hitchedmywagon•25 minutes ago−
Like most of the indie ('underground'?) artists NPR spotlights in life or death, I've never heard of him or his music, but how very nice to celebrate his gifts so that us ignoramuses can become aware. The posted song is interesting, and I'll check out more on other sites.

I'd gotten into MEC late to the party, after listening to a few Pandora stations last year that sprinkled them within. Then Cortez hooked me up with a Best Of Jason/MEC, and I had one of those rare experiences that happens (at most) every few years if you're lucky - where you "discover" a band/artist that you feel you've known your whole life. Thanks Cortez. This is really sad and such a loss. I hope he is in a better place.

Don't listen to Let Me Go if you don't want to end up bawling. It's almost unbearably sad for me right now.
