This just jumped into my head. One of the sayings I have learned from friends in AA is this:

The man takes a drink
The drink takes a drink
The drink takes the man

That is the progression of alcoholism.

I would agree. I don't have a Molina album I don't like, but that's the top of the heap for me.

Though the ones under it fluctuate a lot, my top 3 might just be Didn't It Rain, Ghost Tropic and Magnolia Electric Co. forever. Mi Sei has really been making inroads in recent months, though.

Former MEC guitarist Jason Evans Groth (the curly haired dude) has a Tumblr where he's been periodically transcribing some of his old tour diaries. Only three entries so far, but it's worth reading. A unique perspective on what it was like to work with Jason Molina.

Jason Molina was my friend. I spent weeks - months, even - in vans, hotels rooms, restaurants, and gas stations with him, not to mention on stage, always by his side, always making him look smaller than he was because I am bigger than I should be, always watching him for cues. He was a bandmate. He was a songwriter I respected to the utmost. He was a goofball. He was often an ass. Just as often he was one of the most generous people I knew. He was both extremely confident and supremely insecure. He was one of the best guitar players I’ve ever met when he was on, and one of the worst I’ve ever heard when he wasn’t. Jason could be very difficult, and his alcoholism didn’t make that any easier.

All of us who were in Magnolia Electric Co were in Songs: Ohia before Jason changed the name (which we found out about on Pitchfork).

Groth's tour diary was a good read. I wish he had kept updating it.

back when these came out, i ordered 3 copies. ( the cover cd and the print)
i have framed one of the prints and given one of the cds away.

if anyone wants a print( i have 2 to give) , or the other cd, please send me a message.
i am happy to give them away to a good home. the print is really haunting, beautiful, and so captures jason's lyrics and struggles.
i don't want any money for them, but if you feel inclined, send some money to jason's family for the staggering amounts of medical bills i'm sure they still have left to pay.

"From William Schaff:

"Back in January of this year, I received a message from a friend of Jason's, Tara Samaha. Like so many of us were, she was concerned. She was concerned for his safety, mental and physical health after receiving an alarming email. She felt he needed a map to help him through these troubled times and then asked that I make him one. I did. Sadly we were never able to land a concrete address for Jason, where we knew he would get the map. I know that he had lost things important to him over the past few years, for various reasons, so I wanted to be sure this got into his hands, and no one else. That said -- sadly -- the map was never delivered to him.
Upon learning of his death, the map sat in my studio; it felt cold, and now useless. A guide made for a friend who can no longer see it.
Ryan Graveface and I thought of how, thanks to folks like you, we were able to raise a considerable amount of money for Jason's medical bills through sales of the book, From Black Sheep Boys to Bill Collectors. We thought maybe there is still a way for this map to be useful. Not as it was originally intended, a map for one man, but as tool to commemorate this man, and continue to help his family, especially in such dark times as these. 100% of the profits from this print will be going to Jason Molina's family. We now have a chance to give back to the family that gave us Jason, who in turn gave us all so much.
Our love goes out to the Molina family, and to the family he built in his dusty road travels."

ORDER HERE if you like...it is a limited edition, to 525 copies.

From No Depression:

Jason Molina & The Spineriders' "Hello Future Tinglies"

Spineriders was Molina's high school band, and they sound like, well, a high school band. The Lorian, Ohio crew squeeze 13 tracks into just 25 minutes; even the ambling instrumentals exude a raw, ragged energy. The album provides an invaluable window into the life of Molina whose extraordinary gift would grow, take form and awaken the world in innumerable ways.

Yeah, it's not the best writing or the most spot-on characterization of Jason's music, but it does give him well-deserved props.

Worst music review I've read in a long time. That Heller guy is the pits. Review is offensive to Molina, offensive to the Grateful Dead (well, at least it was until they 'fixed' the glaring mistake), and offensive to the English language. That sweetheart of the rodeo / Route 66 line seriously made me gag.

This might be my favorite Molina song, and lately I finally found a physical copy of the 45 it's on. I've listened to the A side over and over again and it's making me unbelievably sad. For now, everything that needs to be said has probably been, but the tremendous skill of this man is gone. Goddamn.

i was just going to post this.

it was a truly incredible show.
at numerous points, i had tears rolling down my face. i couldn't help it.

i can't even write very well about it. i just feel very lucky to have been there
it was so great to hear his friends and bandmates do the songs. ( the drummer had a great ( the best of the night) voice and felt to me to be the truest /my favorite reflection.) i loved the guy ( hiss golden messenger) and his takes. so passionate. sounded like dylan at times, very cool.

all of it did make me miss jason's voice and think of how much great music that will never be written.

interestingly enough, jason's last show in chicago was here, at the Hideout, supporting Josephine.
i remember getting the opportunity to talk with him for a few minutes outside the venue.
i was excited for his & will johnson's collaboration and the tour they were going to do...and then...well.

I've came around to MMJ's more electro-based shit, but goddamn they committed sacrilege with that tune.

i actually prefer a lot of mmj's more full band arrangements to the early jim in a silo by himself sound, but if ever a song called for that throwback sound it was this one

still though, mmj's obviously a higher profile act than molina ever was so if it gets some new ears turned on, who cares

who's gonna listen to that shit all the way thru?

not a covers fan. seems rare that a cover is believable or touchable or sincere or plugged into the source.

molina should only be covered by neil young and jimmy jack. nobody else. ever.

too much personal spook and shit. can't begin to touch it.

edit to add. i now see wooden wand on the list. may have to buy it after all.

If it's Farewell Transmission you are referring to, I actually think that was a pretty good version of that tune. Stripped down to the bone, raw, electronic (long dark) blues.
