I'm going to see Todd for the first time next week. He's playing 3 straight days where the Tall Corn Grows. He's always loved us here and played plenty of shows in this neck of the woods.

Smitty is right. Todd is tops. Perhaps the best lyricist of the past 20 years. Right there w/Cooley, IMO.

As big of a fan of Todd as I am, I would have to give those sort of props to the likes of John Prine and Guy Clark. The one drawback to me is that his style can grow thin very quickly in spite of his ability to turn a phrase. I just don't find myself tiring of Prine and Clark in the same way. All of that said, I believe him to be the heir apparent to Guy Clark and John Prine, as well as lots of other writers he's been influenced by over the years, including Jimmy Buffett (the man who gave him his start).

Does being such a liberal guy in the country-music business ever rub people the wrong way?

Toby Keith once attacked me, and then molested me. It’s still hard to talk about. I kinda liked it.

"even while the war over gay marriage
and truth be told
the war over gay people's right to be,
rages on

smart people know that it is over
the dumb lost
sure, they are still out there
but their number is heading toward extiction
and will continue to

the republicans had a big meeting recently
they were trying to figure out
how they could distance themselves from this foolishly hateful platform
they've clung to, long after any of them really believed it,
they did this because karl rove had pointed out to them
how vast the dumb were and how easy they were to get a hold of
and manipulate. especially with religion.

gay politicians pretended not to be.
preferring to get their hand jobs in the privacy of the airport bathroom
but thats all over now.

the tide has turned and it won't turn back
first the president, well ....the vice president then the president.. then hilary....
more and more are coming
people whose jobs are based on other people's opinions of them
will have to be open to gay marraige and homosexuality in general
just to survive now
bravo america
people are standing up for the homosexual community because they know its right.
and its not just about gay marriage
its about being gay

dumb people think it's wrong
dumb people think it's a sin
it's just that simple
there is no other way to say it.
it's not christians or people of faith
or poor people or rich people
it's f**king dumb people

they say dumb s**t to excuse their views like
hate the sin, love the sinner
you know why?
because they are dumb.

am i saying i'm smart
yes
smarter then them.

but

the dumb had their day
it's over now
it's time for decent people
to live free and
unashamed by the slow

time to let the phony so-called christians
who often just pretend to be christians
in an effort to lead and exploit the dumb.
(just the worst kind of person really)
and of course all their dumb followers

let them all
slither back under the
westwood church looking rock
they like to pretend
they didnt come out from under

let them hide for a few hundred years

ok maybe i'm getting a little carried away here
live and let live and so forth

i dont know why i'm rambling so much like this
anyway

my plan when i started typing this
was simply to announce

that
i have become a minister
and will now be
performing gay weddings

for a small fee of course" - todd

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but some of the comments in response to this on FB are baffling. How can you call yourself a Todd Snider fan and not be aware of his political beliefs?

Todd Snider is coming to York, PA this January. We don't, normally, get artists like this to play in these parts too often. Then I realized I'm not all that familiar with Todd Snider. I just want to thank all my 3DD brethren for this thread, and special thanks to Dee Dee a fellow Ty Segal fan for kicking it off. I'll be plenty prepared for Todd Snider in January.

What about Snider's supergroup with Dave Schools and whoever else (can't remember 5 beers deep and half asleep)?

I saw that too. As supergroups go, this one is B-list at best (not that there's anything wrong with that). There is a Philly show at Union Transfer and I'm thinking about it. Anyone know what kind of sound do these guys have?

The band is the Hard Working Americans. In addition to Todd and Schools it includes Neal Casal, Duane Trucks and Chad Staehly. Apparently, they have an album coming out in late January, there's more on that (as well as a song sample) here. I was checking his tour dates yesterday and noticed he has some shows coming up with Hayes Carll, Elizabeth Cook and Bobby Bare Jr. in Birmingham, Athens and Charlotte. I'd love to see one of those.

We're planning to see the one in Athens this Friday. It'll be a first for me for all 4 artists.

I've only seen Todd and Bobby (ended up missing Hayes when he was here recently) but can only imagine that you're in for a real treat.

Excited to see that Neal Casal is involved with this. Loved his work with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals but don't know much else about him.

He's played with the Black Crowes, Blackfoot, Tift Merritt, etc. In addition to being an artist in his own right he's also a photographer (he shot the cover for Tift's Tambourine record and plays on it). I first heard of him when he and Kenny Roby (Six String Drag) released an album called Black River Sides in the late 90's/early 00's that included a cover of John Prine's "If You Don't Want My Love". Unfortunately, it appears to be out of print.

He's played with the Black Crowes

Slight correction here...he's never been in The Black Crowes but he is a member of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. He's on both CRB albums and has toured as a part of the band.

Thanks, he's played with so many folks over the years that it's easy to get my wires crossed.

I don't know if anyone around here has seen it, but East Nashville Tonight is pretty great. Full of great performances, and Todd being Todd. It's kinda like a self-aware fear and loathing on the heartworn highway.

RUN, don't walk, to see these guys if they're anywhere near you. Hard to believe they haven't been a unit for 10 years. Except for Todd, not familiar with any of the other band members. Todd was a stupendous frontman on vocals only. Drummer was awesome. 2 guitar players. One was superb on slide and the other played mostly lap steel. The bass player was a fucking beast, mother of god!! Keyboard player was mostly buried. They cooked and grooved and tore the roof off. Seriously, not to be missed
