3DD artist of the week - 5/10/2010 - Todd Snider

Post by dee dee »

Todd Snider

95 percent of Todd Snider concerts include the following greeting somewhere in the first 3 or 4 songs:
“My name is Todd Snider and I’ve been driving around this country for more than 20 years. I make this shit up and I sing it for anybody that’ll listen.

“Some of the songs are gonna be sad, some are gonna be funny, some are gonna be both, some are gonna be short, some are gonna seem like they go on forever and some nights still I like to go on for as many as 18 minutes in between the song.

“And I’ll tell you something else that I might have told you before but I told you before because I meant it before the same way I mean it now: my friends tell me that some of my songs get a little opinionated so I want to say before we go too far in the show that while I might share some of my opinions with you over the course of it I’m not gonna share them with you because I think that they’re smart or because I think that you need to know them. I’m going to share them with you because they rhyme.
“I did not come down here to change anybody’s mind about nothing, I came down here to ease my own mind about everything. “

Obviously influenced by singer-songwriters like John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver, Randy Newman, Kris Kristofferson, and Jerry Jeff Walker, Snider writes songs that include humor, self deprecation, odes to oddballs, old friends and acquaintances, social, political and pop culture commentary, and his own hippie philosophy. His sound can best be pegged as Americana. He’s not the best singer, but he’s also not bad. He’s not the best guitar picker, but he has improved markedly over the last 15 years. I would consider him a great songwriter and an exceptional lyricist. If he didn’t want to perform and write music, he could probably do some Hunter S. Thompson style journalism or stand up comedy. Snider’s personal journey began in Portland, Oregon and has included stops in California, Austin, Athens, Memphis, drug rehabilitation, poverty, and finally East Nashville. He has built a bit of a persona, that of a good natured, unprepared stoner.

One of Snider’s central themes in his songs involves social commentary. Perhaps the greatest example of this is his cult classic, “The Ballad of the Kingsmen”. The song begins with the story of a band from his hometown, The Kingsmen, and the FBI’s interest in the lyrics to “Louie, Louie”. From here the song discusses Marilyn Manson, Columbine, televising violence, our society’s push to succeed, along with religion’s effect on it all. And to this aging hippie, he makes it all make sense. Other social commentary songs to check out: Tension and Standing on A Corner.

Another of Snider’s central topics involves odes. ‘Play a Train Song’ is a moving tribute to East Nashville icon,Skip Litz ( http://www.myspace.com/helenback_again) To really get the full effect of this song, I suggest listening to his story (extremely long) on the fantastic Tales from Moondog Tavern bootleg set. http://atruersound.blogspot.com/2009/06/from-archives-todd-snider-tales-from.html
Another ode worth checking out is “D.B. Cooper”, the airline robber from the 1970s. His most recent album, included “America’s Favorite Pastime”, a humorous look at Doc Ellis and his alleged LSD influenced no-hitter.

Snider also excels when it comes to writing about his own struggles. His most recent album, “The Excitement Plan” includes a song called “Greencastle County Blues” which discusses his own arrest in Greencastle County, Indiana for marijuana possession and leaves him wondering, “How do you know when it’s too late to learn?”. Another one to check out his the wonderful “Tillamook County Jail”, “Can’t Complain”, and the less introspective, but more catchy “Alright Guy”.

My personal fandom regarding Todd Snider did not take off until I saw him live. I knew some of his hits, but when he starts telling his stories and rambling on for as many as eighteen minutes between songs, it all started to make sense to me, his philosophy, his sense of humor, his ability to be sarcastic without being mean, his painfully sad songs that can make you laugh. To a collection of stories and to capture a general feel for the show, check out the previously mentioned “Tales from Moondog’s Tavern”.

For people looking for albums, you are going to find some great songs on all of his albums, but his last three LPs, “East Nashville Skyline”, “The Devil You Know”, and “The Excitement Plan” have been IMO his finest work. If I was to rate his releases today, it would look something like this:

I like Todd Snider a lot and always find myself asking why I don't listen to him more often. He certainly keeps the flame alive of past artists like Jerry Jeff, Kristofferson, REK, Prine, etc. Great choice and excellent write-up dee dee.

Nice write-up. I'm a huge Todd fan. I agree that The Devil You Know is his best studio album, and I have the same next two as you, but reversed. As you''ll probably agree, for my money the best thing a new listener can do would be to download a live show. Once you listen to him live and listen to his hilarious stories that introduce his songs, you'll have much more appreciation for him.

Well done Dee Dee. I like everything I've ever heard by Snider. He's yet another "9b artist" that I need to get into.

Nice write-up Dee Dee! I have The Devil You Know and East Nashville Skyline. He was here a couple of months ago but I did not go as I could not find anyone to go with-- I hate going by myself to shows but I wish I had gone now. Will definitely be picking up some more of his cds.
Looks like a bunch of little whiny fucksticks to me

Thanks for the kind words guys. I really enjoyed writing this. On his new album Micah Schnabel says something to the effect that we are attracted to the artists that remind us of ourselves.

Great write up Dee-dee. I consider myself quite the Todd Snider fan, but I don't reach for Devil as much as I should. I usually go for the live stuff & East Nashville Skyline. Based on your review I'll be revisiting the whole catalogue. Sometimes I like the stories more than the songs...the Story of The Devil's Backbone Tavern has me in stitches every time. Also, although not official releases Todd Sings Jerry Jeff Walker & Todd Sings Kris Kristofferson are a lot of fun.

I know exactly what you mean about the stories. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like Devil You Know as much as I do had it not been for hearing the back story on songs like If Tomorrow Never Comes, Just Like Old Times, The Devil you Know, and highland Street Incident from Moondog's Tavern

another Todd/DBT connection:

http://www.avclub.com/milwaukee/article ... der,14408/
For almost 20 years, country-folk troubadour Todd Snider has, by his own account, been traveling around and “making this shit up and singing it for anybody who will listen.”
That group of anybodies has been relatively small since the release of Snider’s 1994 debut Songs For The Daily Planet, though his songs have been covered by higher-profile country singers like Gary Allan and Jack Ingram. Snider’s brilliant seventh studio album, 2006’s The Devil You Know—and the record’s centerpiece, “You Got Away With It (A Tale Of Two Fraternity Brothers),” one of the decade’s great protest songs—finally earned him notice by critics for his slyly humorous and insightful songwriting. Inspired by personal heroes like John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker, Snider writes songs about losers and deadbeats struggling to get by in Bush’s America, where there’s “a war going on that the poor can’t win.” Snider is poised for a breakthrough with his next album, due later this year and featuring guest spots by Loretta Lynn and Kris Kristofferson. Before then, he spoke with Decider about hanging with Lil’ Wayne and why country radio doesn’t suck.

Decider: You recently told a story about how you met Lil’ Wayne at a party and he called you “Rolling Papers.” Please tell me that actually happened.
Todd Snider: Yeah! I wouldn’t necessarily say it was a party—well, yeah, it was a party, I just wasn’t necessarily invited to it. I was staying in the same hotel as them, and I went down to the bar to get my pre-show drinks right at the same time they were getting their pre-show drinks. And we ended up doing that together. I don’t know if they’d remember that. I sat right next to Lil’ Wayne at the bar, but the other guy was there, too, the guy with the teeth—well, they both have the teeth now—but I remember he was 19 and he kept telling the bartender that. I thought that was really funny.
D: Why did he call you Rolling Papers?
TS: Because I was the only white person there. So he said, “I’m going to call you Rolling Papers.” My wife was with me, but she’s Mexican, and everybody else in there was black. It was a lot of fun. They seemed like fun people. And then they went and did their show, and we went and did our show. And there was a riot for their show. It was crazy. We checked out of the hotel because after their show there were people everywhere.
D: There wasn’t a riot for you, too?
TS: Oh no. Both of the people at my show were real cool.
D: The Devil You Know probably garnered more acclaim than any album in your career. Do you feel like you’re finally on the verge of becoming a rock star?
TS: [Laughs.] No. But I’ve met some. And I’ve shared some of their deli trays.
D: Which rock stars have you met?
TS: I just met Greg Brady this morning. He had that Johnny Bravo period that I thought was exciting. The suit, the way he fit that suit, it was touching. What’s his real name? Barry McWilliams or something?
D: You’re currently based in East Nashville. How connected are you to the Nashville country-music scene?
TS: I like those guys and I go to their parties sometimes. And I like that kind of music. That’s one of the things about East Nashville—we make country music but we don’t make that kind of country music, but we also don’t hate that kind of country music, which is what separates us from different parts of Texas, you know? I respect and admire the idea of, “If this song isn’t on the radio, it’s not worth anything, period.” That’s not how The Stones worked on Sticky Fingers. They didn’t care if “I Got The Blues” got on the radio, it just came out of them. But I can understand the guy who’s like, “If there’s a great song about going through a divorce we can get on the radio, I don’t care if I’m going through a divorce, I want to sing it.” I understand that thinking, it’s just not my thinking. My heroes didn’t do that. So if I can get away with doing it the way I want to do it, I’m gonna. But I sure ain’t going to begrudge Trace Adkins for wanting to make a record with 10 hit singles on it. And I’m sure not going to begrudge the guy driving home liking those singles.
D: Contemporary country gets a bad rap from country artists on the outside looking in, but you obviously don’t share that point of view.
TS: Not at all. It reminds me of when Hootie & The Blowfish was popular and we used to open for them. I’d go out and see them make 10,000 people have fun. I could see them having fun. Who are people to say that these guys aren’t doing something? When I hear some No Depression band guy running down modern country music, I always think, “Ah, I see! You were here for the money, too, weren’t you? They just didn’t give it to you.” I always feel sorry for those guys that want to sound like The Jayhawks and then be on the radio all the time. Well, shit man! If you can’t dig what that gig is, get a real job.
D: Those people always point to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as an ideal, but they recorded sappy love songs, too.
TS: I admire those two, in particular, because that would be the equivalent of the Drive-By Truckers taking over country radio without changing. Goddamn! If they do that, I’ll quit my job and carry their shit! But, the thing is, I brought up a band that’s not bitching about their life. If you ask Patterson [Hood, DBT’s leader], he’d go, “I like that one song Kenny Chesney does.”Almost every station I turn on I like. Jazz took me the longest to get, and now I’m really into that. But I didn’t mind the Backstreet fucking Boys. I really like music, you know? Almost all of it

Yeah, the last link in that bunch takes you to the Jerry Jeff stuff. I've been known to miss things before, but I'm not seeing it?
