First listen isn't doing much for me. Better than Evil Urges, but not by much.

Fraggle music, Sesame Street lyrics. :|

After 85 listens and seeing most all of it performed live, it still doesn't resonate with me.
HOTBM is a keeper live, and Victory Dance isn't bad to open up with before Circuital.

For anyone interested, next week's hometown show will be streamed live and Erykah Badu will be there performing Tyrone with them (as well as Todd Haynes making a film about the show) :D

85 listens to the entire album?! or 85 listens to songs from the album?

I assume the second, because the first would be insane...

I just had 12 hours on the road the past couple days and listened to this a lot. I'm nowhere near 85 but somewhere in the 20s. I keep going back for more. The album has just grown on me and flows great. The Day Is Coming is a favorite. I hear so many damn influences in it. Outta My System's lyrics still eek me a bit but it redeems itself as the song builds. All the rest are good songs. VD>Circuital is great.

I don't know where this album fits in to their catalog. Just like EU. I can't compare them to the first four. I don't know how to even rank the first four because they change so much. Tale of two periods I guess.

Yep. Don't know if I'll even bother buying this one. Maybe if Amazon has the mp3s for $4 or something.

I think "YIM YAMES or LADY GAGA?" would make a pretty fun and challenging "guess who wrote these lyrics" game. Terrible. :x

I'm just going to pretend this album didn't happen and if I see them live hope they don't play too many tracks from the new one.

I just read through the lyrics to "Z"......most of them are just as retarded as EU and Circuital.

i've never liked them for their lyrics, and even Jim has said (basically) they're not a lyrical band..he writes music based on the way things sound together, which has always worked on the past for me..but this time, the lyrics are exceptionally bad (or apparently i'm not getting or i'm in a different place in life).

most people don't even know the words to songs like wordless chorus or one big holiday, and it never mattered

Yep, what Penny said. Lyrics didn't matter as much on the early albums. It was more about how the words sounded, and the way Jim could twist and shape them around the melody. Plus reverb. Lots and lots of reverb.

Maybe the words have always been this bad (I don't think they have, for the most part), but with the last two albums the lyrics have certainly become more of a focal point. So when they're bad, there's no hiding it.

Z isn't a good comparison either, because that album actually has good songs. Write a song as good as It Beats 4 U and you can sing about drowning sacks of puppies for all I care.

That was pretty damn stellar. I had my laptop going and checked it out on my phone too...and the quality was superb on both fronts. Unreal stuff and great show. Badu would be great on a cover of Great Gig in the Sky with someone. She can wail and she's smokin'. I kept worrying about the traction on those 'Spies Like Us' boots Jim had on. Looks like he did just fine.

I only caught a handful of songs (came in about halfway through Tyrone and turned it off a couple seconds into Highly Suspicious  ), but that was pretty damn good. Holding On to Black Metal was fun. Looks like Wordless Chorus (with Erykah Badu) is still up on their Vevo page.

And while I still think the album cover is ugly as hell, the eye thing makes a badass stage backdrop. Wish I was seeing these guys soon.

I don't know if it's the beers I've had tonight, the good vibes I got from the Unstaged show, or that I've accepted the fact that they're never going to make another It Still Moves...but this is growing on me. I might be ready to forgive them for Evil Urges. Progress.
