Overrated/Underrated Thread

Just put an artist, athlete, or whatever into the Overrated slot and follow it with a similar artist who is underrated. For example:

Overrated: Eric Clapton -- we must take into consideration his entire body of work.
Underrated: Johnny Winter -- Aside for a brief couple of years in the spotlight in the midseventies, this American blues guitar master has gone largely unrecognized.

Overrated: Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Generally revered for it's sheer size, and spooky, introverted soundscapes. Contains a significant amount of sub-par (for the band in question's catalog) material, and the interesting production and fills seem to try and make up for some boring (again, in comparison to the band in question's catalog).

Underrated: A Blessing and a Curse. Generally slagged for being a little polished, and less southern, it's a concise album with at most 1 or 2 throwaway tracks, and about 9 killer pieces of songwriting.

Under rated: Poison. Hair metal is BACK OK.

I'm coming up with lots of Underrateds but no overrated contemporaries to compare them to.

Overrated: The Rat Pack
Underrated: Jackie Gleason -- Jackie Gleason was cooler than the entire Rat Pack put together. He was a television pioneer, practically invented what later became known as "Muzak" and was a world class pool player who did all of his own shots in The Hustler while Willie Mosconi did all the shots for Paul Newman.

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits
Ray Davies and the Kinks
Chrissy Hinde and the Pretenders
Bob Seger
John Mellancamp

but I'm having a hard time coming up with contemporaries for each who are truly overrated.

Don't go by the hit single. Check out both of their albums plus the ep recorded with Stan Ridgeway. Then check out Stan's solo stuff. All of their songs are like miniature movies. They are dismissed as a one off novelty band. Unfairly.
