Even though he definitely often comes across as pompous in interviews, Robbie Robertson can play a subtle yet mean guitar. Watch him blow Clapton off the stage:

Kid Congo Powers turns the Gun Club Classic "Mother of Earth" into a Dick Dale inspired instrumental.

Is there a reason why the youtube video won't embed? I think I'm doing everything according to the instructions.

RR's a wonderful player and this is a transcendent moment. Also listening to his playing on Dylan's "royal albert hall" former bootleg - it is wild and raw and totally unRobbie like, but it IS rock n roll.

Frank Zappa, not really known for his guitar playing,

I doubt that very seriously.

Depends on who you're talking about. I think it's fair to say that there's a whole swath of the population that just thinks of zappa as that "wild and crazy guy" who gave his kids weird names. OTOH, people who know a little bit more about music know (or at least have the general idea of) just how talented he was, as a guitarist and in his other musical roles as well.

These 2 have cult followings:

Tommy Bolin (they say he would have been the next Jimi H)

Uli John Roth (his love of Jimi drove him to marry Jimi's ex--Monika Danneman-anyone see the book of art they did together? i think Uli lives in a castle somewhere in Germany now)

I hear you, man. The guitarwork on that album stands among my absolute favorite playing from anyone.

OK, I'm definitely not cool enough. No surprise there. So who is that, dime &/or smitty?

I'll nominate ernie isley, and 2d (or 3d or whatever it is) the awesome and little heard from (at least by me) mick taylor. I don't know if buddy motherfuckin' guy is underrated or not, but he might be, so i'll throw his name into the mix as well.

Oh. Yeah. Got it. Thanks.

And as noted elsewhere in the interim, Nils Lofgren belongs on this list.

Sorry for the serial postings, but just thought about Bonnie Raitt, which reminded me of Susan Tedeschi, too. Bonnie's a better singer than guitarist, but she can get down when she wants to.

Better singer than guitarist??!!!!! Bonnie Raitt????!!! Are you serious???!!! this belongs in the blasphemy thread! She's one of the best slide guitar players to ever grace a stage. I'd put her in the Duane Allman, Derek Trucks class. And I don't think she is much of a singer. Listen to her guitar playing on Streetlights or Give it Up. I dare you.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved
