Years grow shorter, not longer, the more you've been on your own. Feelings for movin' grow stronger so you wonder why you ever go home, wonder why you ever go home.
People are movin' so quickly. Humor's in need of repair. Same occupations and same obligations; they've really got nothing to share, like drivin' around with no spare.
River gets deeper not shallow, the further you move down the stream. Wonderin' if I can keep her as I race to keep up with my dreams. How they shine and glitter and gleam.

I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts - X
The facts we hate, we'll never meet walking down the road.
Everybody yelling "hurry up!" "hurry up!"
But i'm waiting for you, I must go slow.
I must not think bad thoughts.
What is this world coming to?
Both sides are right but both sides murder.
I give up, why can't they?
I must not think bad thoughts.
I must not think bad thoughts.
The civil wars and the uncivilized wars.
conflagrations leap out of every poor furnace.
The food cooks poorly and everyone goes hungry.
from then on it's dog eat dog, dog eat body, body eat dog.
I can't go down there. I can't understand it.
I'm a no good coward, an american too, a north american that is,
not a south or a central or a native american.
oh i must not think bad thoughts.
I'm guilty of murder of innocent men,
innocent women, innocent children, thousands of them!
My planes, my guns, my money, my soldiers,
my blood on my hands, it's all my fault!
I must not think bad thoughts.
I must not think bad thoughts.
the facts we hate, you'll never hear us.
"I hear the radio is finally gonna play new music,
you know the british invasion?"
But what about the Minutemen, Flesh Eaters, DOA,
Big Boys and the Black Flag?
Will the last american band get played on the radio?
please bring the Flag, please bring the Flag!
Glitter disco, synthesizer, night school.
All this noble savage drum, drum, drum.
Astronauts going back in time to hang out with the cave people.
It's about time, it's about space.
It's about some people in the strangest place.
Woody Guthrie sang about b-e-e-t-s not b-e-a-t-s.
I must not think bad thoughts
I must not think bad thoughts

I came in off a dead end street Walked in slow and took a back row seat I knew I had nothing new to say So many people looked so burned out I couldn't help feeling bad about just having to be there anyway
A friend of a friend from work came in I never had known what to make of him He'd always seemed to be so insincere to me You know I've always been afraid of a 12 step crowd They laugh too much and talk too loud Like they all know where everyone should be
It's been a long long long year It's been a long long long year How did I get here?
They were talking in a circle, I was by myself Everyone was telling everyone how they felt It felt like so long since I'd been young As the circle kept moving its way to the back I was wondering what I was gonna say in fact I still didn't know as it rolled off my tongue
It's been a long long long year It's been a long long long year How did I get here?
I didn't say a word all the way to the car But a little later on that night at the bar I was telling everybody how strange my day had been They said brother all you need is another shot So I threw one down and said thanks a lot As I thought to myself well here we go again
It's been a long long long year It's been a long long long year How did I get here?

Yeah I've come to know the wishlist of my father. I've come to know the shipwrecks where he wished. I've come to wish aloud among the overdressed crowd. Come to witness now the sinking of the ship. Throwing pennies from the seatop next to it.
And I've come to roam the forest past the village With a dozen lazy horses in my cart. I've come here to get eyed To do more than just get by I've come to test the timber of my heart. Oh I've come to test the timber of my heart.
And I've come to be untroubled in my seeking. And I've come to see that nothing is for naught. I've come to reach out blind To reach forward and behind For the more I seek the more I'm sought Yeah, the more I seek the more I'm sought.
And I've come to meet the sheriff and his posse, To offer him the broad side of my jaw. I've come here to get broke, Then maybe bum a smoke. We'll go drinking two towns over after all. Well, we'll go drinking two towns over after all.
And I've come to meet the legendary takers. I've only come to ask them for a lot. Oh they say I come with less than I should rightfully possess. I say the more I buy the more I'm bought. And the more I'm bought the less I cost.
And I've come to take their servants and their surplus. And I've come to take their raincoats and their speed. I've come to get my fill To ransack and spill. I've come to take the harvest for the seed. I've come to take the harvest for the seed.
And I've come to know the manger that you sleep in. I've come to be the stranger that you keep. I've come from down the road, And my footsteps never slowed. Before we met I knew we'd meet. Before we met I knew we'd meet.
And I've come here to ignore your cries and heartaches. I've come to closely listen to you sing. I've come here to insist That I leave here with a kiss. I've come to say exactly what I mean. And I mean so many things.
And you've come to know me stubborn as a butcher. And you've come to know me thankless as a guest. But will you recognize my face When God's awful grace Strips me of my jacket and my vest, And reveals all the treasure in my chest?
The first time I heard Visions of Johanna it scared the shit out of me. I was tripping balls and trying to force myself to sleep. Bad idea. On the flipside, I was in a weird, uncommitted place in life and this song hit me hard. Pretty much careless, like we all were once. Nonetheless, I was actually shying away from this song for some time after because of that. That was years ago and it reigns in my head as my favorite Dylan song. I'm no Dylanist by any means, but that song captures so much of him and what he was about. Fucking stupendous.
These lyrics brought me down and got me going in 98-99.
"Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously And when bringing her name up He speaks of a farewell kiss to me He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall Oh, how can I explain ? It's so hard to get on And these visions of Johanna they kept me up past the dawn."
Acid can be great in the right dosages, eh.

Louise only got from me innocent poetry Although she played to not listen But still I can hear myself speak as if no one else Ever could offer the same
Some say she knowingly tastes like a recipe All those so foolish and willing I said, "Babe, I can picture you bend as if wanting to Bow as the curtain goes down"
Cuddle some men, they'll remember you bitterly Fuck 'em, they'll come back for more I asked my Louise, would she leave and so, cripple me Then came a knock at the door
I came for my woman, he came with a razor blade Bound like us all for the ocean I hope that she's happy, I'm blamed for the death Of a man who would take her from me
Some say they saw in me innocent poetry Some say they'll never be certain But still it's been written, a history of lovers In giving, and taking, and ink
Cuddle some men, they'll remember you fittingly Cut 'em, they'll come back for more I asked my Louise, would she leave and so, cripple me Then came the knock at the door
Louise came to rescue me, missing the irony Blood made her heart change its beating I hope that she's happy, I'm blamed for the death Of a man she found better than me

Someone’s got it in for me, they’re planting stories in the press Whoever it is I wish they’d cut it out but when they will I can only guess They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me I can’t help it if I’m lucky
People see me all the time and they just can’t remember how to act Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at I couldn’t believe after all these years, you didn’t know me better than that Sweet lady
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth Blowing down the backroads headin’ south Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth You’re an idiot, babe It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike I haven’t known peace and quiet for so long I can’t remember what it’s like There’s a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin’ out of a boxcar door You didn’t know it, you didn’t think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars After losin’ every battle
I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin’ ’bout the way things sometimes are Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin’ me see stars You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies One day you’ll be in the ditch, flies buzzin’ around your eyes Blood on your saddle
Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb Blowing through the curtains in your room Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth You’re an idiot, babe It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe
It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn’t enough to change my heart Now everything’s a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped What’s good is bad, what’s bad is good, you’ll find out when you reach the top You’re on the bottom
I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind I can’t remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes don’t look into mine The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building burned I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime turned Slowly into Autumn
Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth You’re an idiot, babe It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I can’t feel you anymore, I can’t even touch the books you’ve read Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin’ I was somebody else instead Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory And all your ragin’ glory
I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I’m finally free I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me You’ll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above And I’ll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love And it makes me feel so sorry
Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats Blowing through the letters that we wrote Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves We’re idiots, babe It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves
It’s the day before Thanksgiving I’m not feeling much of thanks Just a low-grade desperation leaves me reeling in the ranks Just when I think I’m getting somewhere it’s somewhere further to fall It’s the day before Thanksgiving that is all
I don’t believe the pilgrims sat with Indians for a feast A self-proclaimed holy sailor doesn’t break bread with his beast But then again he had a musket and the Indian had a knife And the musket man could make him eat for life
I don’t believe this country’s manifestering destiny Someone just cooked it up and it is fed to you and me They tell us who to love and war and never ask for help And they cannot stand us thinking for ourselves
The day before Thanksgiving back in 1991 A millionaire let me drive his Mercedes just for fun And I drove it with the top down on them Blue Ridge Mountain roads He let me keep it thirteen weeks or so
And I know what he was saying with that car that wasn’t mine That I could have one too if I just did not cross the line But lines were made for crossing and I was born to crack the code And there ain’t no shame in walking down this road
So it’s turkey breast and stuffing with gravy on the top Mashed potatoes, peas and dinner rolls, you use them like a mop Got my position at the table, got a child to say my grace And a wife and boss that keeps me in my place
It’s the day before Thanksgiving I’m not feeling much of thanks Just a low-grade desperation leaves me reeling in the ranks Just when I think I’m getting somewhere it’s somewhere further to fall It’s the day before Thanksgiving that is all
You'd never know by looking We were ever more than strangers But, we're celebrating ten years Of wedded bliss
She made the rounds as usual While, I sit here stoned, as usual Lord, I can't believe we survived Ten years of this
Ten years together A million nights alone Whose mistake is it? What do we blame it on?
If someone else would tell me What I already know in my mind I'm afraid I'd start talking With my fists
But, I know, I'm all lying What ain't dead, by now is dying What in hell kept us together For ten years of this?
Ten years together A million nights alone Whose mistake is it? What do we blame it on?
Maybe you start cheating Because you married so young Whatever it is I can't go home
I know, I can't take it Too long, I've had to fake it I just don't think we can make it Through ten more years of this
In the mid 80's, while touring Florida with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan sought out Gary Stewart and went to his methlab of a trailer to tell him he was obsessed with this song.

On the outskirts of expansion, looking out from Blueprint peak The flow is flooding of urban setters panning through rivers running dry. Numbers roll on in, smiling a lottery grin, a sadness blurs the eye... It's just a matter of time before they're moving on It's just a matter of time before they're moving on Doesn't take much time for plans to go wrong and chase another ghost of a chance. In the shadows of chain-store ghost towns where no one walks the streets at night, a silent nation hooked on medication, stares into a blue flickering light. the young drift off alone and the old are whisked away and prospects keep looking up, but the line's getting longer on the lost highway, the line's getting longer on the superstition highway Doesn't take much time for plans to go astray and chase another ghost of a chance They say deep down inside, lie properties of a healing kind,
If so it'd better come around soon and do a little bit of service and repair do a little bit of service and repair do a little more service and repair Doesn't take much time for plans to change and offer up another chance for a little bit more service and repair do a little bit of service and repair Doesn't take much time for plans to change and offer up another chance at sewing the dream better suited for both soul and soil.

She asked for her mama’s bathrobe And a pot of potato soup She’s gonna dry out this time if it kills her She wants the whole family in the loop
She can outsmart death like a stuntman She’s a cat with 99 lives She’s my heroin addict sister And I’ve known her all my life
She's my heroin addict sister And I hate to see her go And I hate to see her holdin' old to the end of the same old rope the end of the same ole rope
She pushes a tiny needle It’s like the devil’s DNA It takes her somewhere she’s just gotta go But can’t afford to stay
She stripped for a while in Connecticut Got married at least 5 times Every one of them men was crazy about her So she married a couple of em twice
She’s a certified underwater welder She can cook, clean, and crochet She can flash a smile from her sweet weary soul That’ll melt all your doubts away
She's my heroin addict sister And I hate to see her go And I hate to see her holdin' old to the end of the same old rope the end of the same ole rope
She’s high at the homeless shelter When she’s had it out with my niece She don’t notice the holes in her clothes Or perverted Orlando police
I’ve been so mad I wanted to kill her So worried I had to cry Such crazy stories I can’t help but laugh So scared of when she’s gonna die
She called outside of Atlanta Been dodging them big ole trucks Ya know she cleaned up in Tennessee one time before She just needs a couple hundred bucks And she just needs to be with us
We all say "Thank God mama Ain’t here to go through it this time She’s in heaven telling them Macon County cops Better give her baby a ride" And they got to her just in time
She's my heroin addict sister And I hate to see her go And I hate to see her holdin' old to the end of the same old rope the end of the same ole rope Always at the end of the rope

Torn and Frayed Rolling Stones
Hey let him follow you down, Way underground wind and he's bound. Bound to follow you down, Just a dead beat right off the street. Bound to follow you down. Well the ballrooms and smelly bordellos And dressing rooms filled with parasites. On stage the band has got problems, They're a bag of nerves on first nights. He ain't tied down to no home town, Yeah, and he thought he was wreckless. You think he's bad, he thinks you're mad, Yeah, and the guitar player gets restless.
And his coat is torn and frayed, It's seen much better days. Just as long as the guitar plays Let it steal your heart away, Let it steal your heart away.
Joe's got a cough, sounds kind a rough, Yeah, and the codeine to fix it. Doctor prescribes, drug store supplies, Who's gonna help him to kick it
Well his coat is torn and frayed, It`s seen much better days. Just as long as the guitar plays Let it steal your heart away, Let it steal your heart

Contains some of my favorite lines of any song in recent memory, particularly this one:
All these people on the couch Are acting like they live here All the smoke and alcohol We just wanna be around someone...
If you like what you hear by all means be sure to check out Ryan's Donkey LP. You can sample tracks from it at CD Baby or his MySpace site. In another time and place this stuff would be all over rock n' roll radio.
*** Edited to add: I'm not sure why the MySpace link takes you to Google's homepage, I tried it in another browser (I'm currently using Chrome and tried it in Safari) and it did the same thing. Strange.
*** Edited again to add: The link to Ryan's MySpace seems to be working now. Anyone give it a listen? If so, what'd you think?

Time for me to go away I'll get a new name, I'll get a new face Time for me to go away No I don't belong in this place
But I'm not gonna ask you why You think the parade has passed you by Or if everything good is gone into the western sky
I hate to see you look that way All the beauty has left your face That's such an easy thing to give away That's impossible to replace
So I'll take you in my two weak hands And I'll throw you so high Watch you fall forever in the western sky And when you land you'll turn into some kind of prize Into somebody's sweet prize
I won't see you no more Who am I to rate that high The world's a shadow of what went before The world gives off none of it's own light
So please be happy baby And please don't cry Even though the parade has passed us by Well you can still see it shining in the western sky So why won't you stop crying You can still see it shining
