musical brain dump....or things i think i hear

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

The opening brass note on Buffalo soldier by Bob Marley sounds like my office fax machine when I get a fax.

Sometimes Joey Kneiser sounds like the guy from The Fray.

Once I heard it, I can't unhear it. However, it doesn't matter because Glossary is fucking awesome and the dude can write a song.

Every time I hear track 5 ("Black Moon") start on the new Wilco album, I think about "Sounds Better in the Song".

Then I just wanna listen to that instead.

The Bottle Rockets 'Mountain To Climb' has some guitar work that sounds exactly like parts of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord'. Was this intentional (as a sorta parody of George supposedly nickin' that song from the Chiffons 'He's So Fine)'?

Definitely. I always jump to SBITS too. Shame, because Black Moon is a great enough track on its own.

Just kind of a common riff, IMO. I don't think it was particularly intentional.

Same. It gets me every god damn time. Even if (especially if) I'm out in the middle of nowhere.

a lot of billy gibbons in cooley's songwriting.
groovy swing vibe on ny & ch live @ fillmore.
i hear a dying man in most hank sr. songs.
heavy stones influence in cracker.
i think tom petty nicked the opening riff of mary jane's last dance from the jayhawks or vice versa.

As a fan of Camper Van Beethoven I was really surprised how much Cracker sounded like the Stones. One guy fronts 2 bands that are NOTHING alike. And in the same decade.

When I listened to it, I was thinking "you're full of shit".

This is because when I hear the opening licks fo Charlie in my head, I only hear the meatier, low end chords. I just Charlie on, and you're absolutely right. The lead licks are dead ringers.

Musical kindred spirits... "Miss You"/Stones ----> "Break Up Song"/Kihn ----> "I Ain't Hiding"/Crowes ----> "Hot Talk"/Prophet

Prophet's voice has always had echoes of Ray Davies to these ears, but my goodness, on "Temple Beautiful" (the song specifically not the whole album) it's like he's channeling Davies.

And "Willie Mays Is Up At Bat" is one of the greatest song titles ever.

Edit: The Prophet albums I have are variously cataloged by iTunes as alternative (2), rock, country and indie (1 each). No real point, i just thought that was amusing.

While I had "Hardwire Healing" on in the car today, my fiance goes "this guy sounds like Jack White" (on Maker's Mound).

I wouldn't normally frame it in such a rudimentary sense, but I had to agree.

I also convinced her that "Temple Beautiful" was a new Petty album for a couple minutes.

Not sure one chord over and over can be considered a "riff"
