Review of the Wooden Wand show at Duke Coffeehouse in Durham from Friday night by Grayson Currin of Durham's Independent Weekly. I had hoped to attend myself but it just wasn't in the cards. Also on the bill were Nathan Bowles and Wood Ear.

Live: Wooden Wand lets them ponder

from aquarium drunkard.

nice read up and interview with mr. wand.

Wrapping one’s head around the music of Wooden Wand, the ongoing project of idiosyncratic singer/songwriter James Jackson Toth takes some effort. With over 100 releases to his name, from spiraling freak-out ragas and avant-garde experimentation to classic Asylum Records-style folk pop – Toth skips through styles like a zealous host swapping out LPs on the turntable at a party.

So jimmyjack, does Pitchfork spit or swallow? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I still can't get enough of this one. Especially this time of year - great wintertime music.

I put "Winter in Kentucky" on an annual mix exchange an old college buddy and I have been doing since the late 90's and he is obsessed with it.

Thanks yall! And I was as surprised by the Pitchfork love as anyone. They've been sorta down on me in recent years (didn't even review Briarwood). That said, I thought Grayson's Pitchfork review was terrific, obviously - thoughtful and kind.

Thanks for the kind words, gang. Some 3DD love beats any review I could get. :)

Thanks for the post! Also, those of you do the digital thing, we've started uploading rare / unreleased / demo / live Wooden Wand stuff here:

http://woodenwand.bandcamp.com/

I'm conflicted about it, being a 'physical media' guy myself, but summer's tough, and so it's either this or fill out the Trader Joe's application that's been sitting on my desk since November. ;)

Sorry for spamming.

Damn Jimmy Jack. You're a prolific songwriter. 100 releases? Holy shit.

I just listened to Alpha Dawn for the first time this afternoon. Really like that song. You're getting some nice attention in Aquarium Drunkard. Congrats.

Thanks Rocky! If you'll pardon some pimping, "Alpha Dawn" will be out on the next official Wooden Wand album, which will be called Farmer's Corner (I, err, think I just gave 3DD an exclusive on this fact - :D ) and released on Fire Records sometime in early 2014. In the meantime, there's a limited edition vinyl-only thing on Three Lobed called Wooden Wand & The World War IV out now! Definitely more of a (post?) rock record. Thanks again for listening!

Sorry if this has been posted, but holy shite: http://vimeo.com/63926824

Met JJ at Hopscotch in Raleigh a few years back. Couldn't have possibly been a nicer guy, and his band absolutely fucking. killed. it.

Enjoy.

EDIT: I lived in Telluride one summer in college in the late 80's. This song grabbed me even before I made the connection.

Some nice love for Wooden Wand & The World War IV over on The Drunkard. After listening to "Directions to Debbie Harry's House" yesterday I immediately purchased the album. Got two listens in already and it sounds great, JJ!

" it’s one of the more powerful rock records of 2013." Wow, some really nice commentary there, JJ. Congrats. I'll definitely be contributing to your college fund (or food budget) shortly.
