3DD Top Albums of 2010: Voting Thread

Post by shuffle »

so yeah, as I said in the 2010-music thread, I figured we'd do a forumwide top albums list. here's the deal: you post ordered lists of between 10 and 50 albums (you can post more if you wanna but only the top 50 will count for the list purpose) and I'll compile it all to a finished 3DD forum top albums of 2010 list. please write comments about why you like the albums on your list, at least for your top picks, it makes everything more interesting and it makes it far more likely that someone else will check out whichever album you adore.

here's the rules (I copied these from another forum where I did one of these things, although they're slightly altered):

Rules:
-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
1. To be included in this poll please post a ranked list of at least 10 albums. LISTS THAT ARE NOT RANKED AND LISTS THAT HAVE FEWER THAN 10 ALBUMS WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN FINAL CALCULATIONS. The maximum number of albums that will be included from a list is 50. You can edit or post new lists anytime up until the deadline.

2. Please post lists using the format: 1. Artist - Album

3. Here are the type of albums that can be included:
a. Studio albums released in 2010 (first release counts, wherever it was released, and in whatever format)
b. Live albums released in 2010 that consist of material recorded during 2010 (or the previous years, use common sense here).
c. EP’s
d. Compilations with previously unreleased material that were recorded in 2010 or the previous years and released in 2010 (use common sense again)

4. Here are the type of albums that CAN NOT be included:
a. Live albums with material recorded prior to, say, 2007 and released in 2010
b. Singles
c. Compilations of primarily previously released material (e.g., box sets, greatest hits, etc)

Comments are encouraged and will be included in the roll-out of the final list.

The deadline is December 31st. Unless you guys want me to extend it, I figured most people will have a pretty decent idea of how their lists will look by now, but if not we could extend it a few days/a week at most (after that I've got exams and shit and the university).

Points will awarded according to this system (unless anyone got a better idea):
#50 receives 1 point
#49 receives 2 points
#48 receives 3 points
etc
etc
#6 receives 45 points
#5 receives 47,5 points
#4 receives 50 points
#3 receives 52,5 points
#2 receives 55 points
#1 receives 60 points.

questions etc? (if something is unclear, don't assume, just ask :D ).

edit: also, if there's no interest or just a small one I won't be bothered to compile this, but if we could get at least ten lists or so we'll be set :)

As previously noted, I heard less new music this year than i can ever remember, but here's the best of what i did hear, somewhat revised and expanded from my original list as i've heard a few more contenders and reconsidered some others:

1. Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse – Dark Night of the Soul - Intense, compelling, inventive. Hugely ambitious, it hits a lot more than it misses but has its uneven moments
2. Bruce Springsteen - The Promise - I'd say the mid to late 70's was a pretty fertile period for the Boss :)
3. Neil Young - Le Noise - A man and his guitar. Electric, that is.
4. Los Lobos - Tin Can Trust - A defining moment short of the top spot; yet another excellent effort by this great band
5. DBT - The Big To Do - Suffers by comparison only to their own impossibly high standards. A rock solid rock album w/ many highlights

6. Glossary - Feral Fire - A pleasant discovery by this previously unknown to me band
7. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way - One of their best; old school and proud of it
8. Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love
9. Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
10. Peter Wolf - Midnight Souvenirs - Like DBT, suffers a little in comparison to his best, but the guy still brings it and is always worth a listen

11. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs - Totally overhyped, but in the end, a pretty good listen
12. Ray Wylie Hubbard - A. Enlightment - Great cover of "Drunken Poet's Dream" and typically strong throughout. Another great find I owe to 3DD and 4sooner
13. Teenage Fanclub - Shadows - something a little different from these guys, short on great hooks but comes together nicely as a whole
14. The Hold Steady - Heaven is Whenever - more of the same, for better or worse
15. The New Pornographers - Together - more of the same, for better or worse

16. The Scissor Sisters - Night Work - Not likely to appeal to many here, but sometimes you just want to party w/ the hip, gay crowd
17. Eli "Paperboy" Reed - Come and Get It - Old school soul w/ some modern touches
18. David Byrne/Fatboy Slim - Here Lies Love (the 2d most interesting album of the year after #1, though I'm very curious to hear the Ben Folds/Nick Hornby collaboration as well)
19. Cee Lo Green - Lady Killer (Based only on the single, which is my nominee for song of the year)
20. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - s/t - solid but they're still looking for that breakthrough

In addition to Folds/Hornby, other unheard albums that i suspect might make the list include Ray LaMontagne, Two Cow Garage and Gil Scott-Heron

2 suggestions, Shuffle: the 2.5 point "bonus" is gonna be a pain in the neck for you; i suggest making that a 5 point differential and then making the last one 10 points. Also, I'd give bonus points to the top 10 rather than 5.

nice list, btb. the promise won't count though, just fyi. I probably should check out that los lobos album, but I haven't heard any of their other albums.

the 2,5 points won't really make it any more complicated for me really, I've done this before ;) the thought behind the smaller steps was that there's not that big a difference between your number five and six, and five points would be too large a difference... I'd prefer to have the entire top ten count more, but when the minimum amount of albums are ten too it could make for some "unfair" points (say, someone has heard 11 albums this year, one sucked, loved three, thought five were good, and two were just ok, then the two that'd make #9 and #10 would get way too much extra points since they were just included to fill required number of albums - and having a higher limit might discourage people from posting, if everyone's list will be minimum 20 I'll probably give the entire top ten extra points, but as it is now I'd rather not).

Well, you're the boss, so to speak, but I don't know why the promise doesn't count - there's a bunch of previously unreleased stuff on there.

You have to hear los lobos; the problem is that there's no single definitive album. In addition to the current one, some good choices are their first major release, How Will the Wolf Survive, Kiko and The Neighborhood. The 2 disc compilation, Just Another Band From East L.A. is very good, but i'd recommend the individual albums.

it's mainly because it's an archival release, and calling the promise 2010 music is definitely a stretch. if everyone would like that kind of albums to be included it'd be alright, but for me it's just not a 2010 album. then stuff like neil young's archives series would've been fine last year.

alright, thanks :) probably gonna start with the new one...

My top 15:

1. Simone Felice - Live from a Lonely Place. Raw, real, heartbreaking. Stripped down to the bone.

2. Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues. Is there another artist/band as consistent as JTE? Three albums and an EP into his career, and I can't think of a negative thing to say about any of them. A great batch of songs here, elevated by some nimble electric guitar playing (that's all Isbell, right?).

3. Roadside Graves - You Won't Be Happy With Me (EP). It's been a lot of fun watching these guys evolve. Probably my favorite non-DBT band.

4. Black Keys - Brothers. Huge step forward for these guys. They took everything that worked up to this point, threw out everything that didn't, and made what might be their masterpiece.

5. Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt

6. Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do. Probably my most-listened-to album of the year.

7. Various - Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows (John Prine tribute)

8. Josh Ritter - So Runs the World Away. I'm still waiting for him to release another album that approaches the perfection of The Animal Years. This wasn't it, but it's not bad, either.

9. Spoon - Transference. Another solid album of alternate universe #1 singles. These guys needs to release a real turd at some point so people will start appreciating how great the rest of their stuff has been.

10. Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart. Mostly (ok, solely) for "The Hair Song".

11. Phosphorescent - Here's To Taking It Easy. There was a sweltering hot two or three week stretch over the summer where this was all I listened to it. Haven't gone back to it much since, but I need to. Reminds me of early MMJ. Perfect album for riding the bike to work on an 80-degree morning.

12. Various - Twistable, Turnable Man: Tribute to the Songs of Shel Silverstein.

13. John Prine - In Person and On Stage

14. Bruce Springsteen - The Promise. I've only had it for a week. Might be higher if I did this in February.

15. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Hawk

2010 stuff I heard that didn't make the cut:

Ryan Bingham - Junky Star (yawn. I still think he's the Gavin Rossdale of alt-country), Tom Petty/Heartbreakers - Mojo (bigger yawn. Candy is the worst song I heard in 2010, maybe ever), Black Crowes - Croweology (just ok), Jakob Dylan - Women and Country.

I probably got into music in general during 2010 more than any year in my life. Funny how music can make days that seem barely bearable, tolerable. Thanks to the TDD community for helping awaken a deep passion in me for music.

1. Two Cow Garage – Sweet Saint Me. Two Cow Garage peaks with catchy power pop (Lydia), pissed off punk (My Great Gatsby), beautiful tributes to a friend and his new child (Jackson Don't You Worry), while still keeping with their alt-country roots (Wanted to Be).

2. The National – High Violet. The album that forced me to "get" The National continues to grow on me with every listen. How can something so sad and miserable be so beautiful? Moody, complex songs of adult angst full of sound make this one of the year's very best.

3. Black Keys – Brothers. So what if this is a bit slicker than their previous releases. Top to bottom, great
songs that rock.

4. Drive-by Truckers – The Big To-do. Stories of strippers, shitty jobs, drinking binges, a wife murdering her preacher husband over kinky sex, the death of the scene, and more make an average DBT album one of my favorites of 2010. In my mind, these boys (and girl) can do no wrong. (How did "Girls Who Smoke" not make the final cut? Love that song.)

5. Ryan Bingham – Junky Star. I had some concern that after the success of "The Weary Kind", Bingham might head towards pop country. This concern was misplaced. To me, Junky Star captures the tone of 2010 in the U.S.A. Songs of hardship, desperation, and even a shot at conservative media. I've loved all of Bingham's releases and this rivals Mescalito as my favorite.

6. Delta Spirit – History From Below. I thought sophomore albums were supposed to be the ones that were a setback? Following up the solid debut, "Ode To Sunshine", Delta Spirit set out to record an album inspired by one of the most informative history books of the last 50 years, Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. If you love folk rock like me, you just may love this. The rest of the free world can have Mumford and Sons, I'll take this thank you very much.

7. Phosphorescent – Here’s to Taking it Easy. I'd given Phosphorescent's previous albums listens and they were decent, but not decent enough to give repeated listens. This bit of dreamy California country was different and one of 2010's biggest surprises for me.

8. Blitzen Trapper – Destroyer of the Void. A sonic blend of 70s rock, The Beatles, and modern day indie rock.

9. Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse – Dark Night of the Soul. In a dark album which saw Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous) pass away along with album contributor Vic Chesnutt, you are treated to a trippy, lonely bit of psychedelia. The Flaming Lips, Black Francis, film maker David Lynch, and Jason Lytle all contribute stellar tracks. I liked Danger Mouse's Broken Bells project, and I know this puts me in the minority, but I like this better. Be careful, this thing may cause you float in outer space.

10. Neil Young – Le Noise. Amazing that a musician can stay relevant for over forty years, but with Le Noise Neil Young does just that. A man and an electric guitar belt out arguably his best album in the last ten years.

11. Otis Gibbs – Joe Hill’s Ashes. While Micah Schnabel's musings are more personal, Otis Gibbs' causes deep reflection on the plight of the working man, politics, and social commentary. Strange that he can be so insightful about America and have a large following in Europe but not in the United States.

12. Micah Schnabel – When the Stage Lights Go Dim. I wasn't sure if this was a 2009 or 2010 release, but Suburban Home Records didn't release this until 2010 and I didn't hear it until 2010 so I'm calling it 2010. With Two Cow Garage's Sweet Saint Me and this release, Micah Schnabel brings the most heartfelt songs I heard this year. Life on the road, anxiety, heartbreak, and more punch you in the gut.

13. Titus Andronicus – The Monitor. An epic concept album loosely based around The Civil War mixes punk, rock, and an indie sound that sounds paranoid, hopeless, and confused.

14. Jamey Johnson – The Guitar Song. The Guitar Song firmly cements Jamey Johnson's place as the modern day torchbearer for Outlaw Country. Twenty five songs fly by with Johnson's gifted storytelling and Waylon Jennings like style.

15. Justin Townes Earle – Harlem River Blues. While I prefer the more Nashville sounding Americana of last year's excellent JTE release, Midnight At the Movies, that only speaks to the quality of that album. This album sees JTE bringing his New York influence into the studio to meld with his Nashville Americana style with predictably great results.

16. Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions
17. Chatham County Line - Wildwood
18. Roky Erickson with Okkervil River – True Love cast out all evil
19. Fred Eaglesmith – Cha Cha Cha
20. The Sadies – Darker Circles
21. Songs of John Prine - Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows
22. Megafaun – Heretofore
23. Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel – Eyas
24. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
25. Tim Barry – 28th and Stonewall

I wish more people had heard Chip Robinson's Mylow. It got an early digital release in 2009 thanks to iTunes but wasn't "officially" released until 2010. Despite the excellence of the record and the rave reviews which reflected that, it still managed to somehow slip through the cracks, sort of like The Backsliders themselves, the band he used to front. Back in the day, The Backsliders were overshadowed by the success of Whiskeytown. Sad to see that still happening even today with the mediocre (at least by most accounts) III/IV when Mylow is far more deserving of the sort of attention Ryan Adam's leftovers have received.

I actually have it at 67th on my big board (seriously). It may suffer in my mind from the same thing that Ray Wylie Hubbard and Kasey Anderson did, it came out so early and it sounded good not great to my ears that I didn't come back to it much in the 2nd 1/2 of the year.

Fair enough. I read something recently from a PR person that said you never release new albums between November and February. Guess DBT (as well as plenty of others) never got that memo. Even though I've purchased my fair share of music this year there's also several albums I've missed out on. Rather than attempting to play catch up with those I've been revisiting the records I purchased in 2010 so I can more fairly evaluate them.

I think I'll extend the deadline until Monday (sometime during the morning for you guys, it's not that important), mainly because I won't have the time to tabulate these things anyway... You can edit your lists until Sunday evening.
