I'm hoping to see him at MSG on either 12/29 or 1/18.

I believe The Dexateens are done. Elliott McPherson has alluded to it a few times on his facebook page-he is an accomplished carpenter and has been quite public about his search for a permanent position. Lee Bains has a new band The Glory Fires that sounds promising and he has been touring with them.

However The Dexateens are prepping a live DVD and album--when those are released maybe that will generate new interest in the band and they will be back. 8-)

It's great seeing Slobberbone on so many lists. They are truly epic live.

But want to. In no particular order. By definition, if you've already outgrown clubs and theatres then I feel like I missed the boat and no longer want to see you no matter how great I think you are.

The Black Keys (borderline too big already)
Futurebirds (They played my town a couple of weeks before I found out about them. FUCK!!!!!!!!!)
The Avett Brothers
South San Gabriel
Frank Fairfield

A frustrating band. Unbelievably strong recorded output. However, a very erratic live band due to their infrequent touring and the highly combustible band chemistry. I was at the second to last show that they did with Sweetdog as their drummer, in Knoxville. They quit after half an hour and Elliot and Sweetdog literally had to be separated at stage left or they would have come to blows. This band was basically over when John Smith left for the final time. For better or for worse, the Elliot/John crazy synergy/interaction made the band. It was only a matter of time once he bailed, regardless of whether or not they played good shows after he left. Elliot and I were pen pals for a time and although I think he's brilliant and a nice fella he's also got really thin skin and has a tendency to overreact to adversity. Those are fatal character flaws when you're trying to make a go at it as a working musician. Perhaps he realized as much.

For the record, they WERE capable of RULING IT live back in the day. The entire reason I went to Isbell's last shows with DBT(which no one at the time knew to be the case of course) was because the Dexateens were the openers. They were fucking badass all three nights. For those of you with those bootlegs, when Elliot dedicates Makers Mound the last night in Charleston to "our friends from Wisconsin", he was talking about me and my crew. He told me after the show that they didn't really know that song having never played it since cutting it with Patterson but they got it together for us during soundcheck because they knew we made the trek for them. A fond memory no doubt.

Saw Vampire Weekend on the very first North American tour after the first record came out. At a club that they'd outgrown before they even started the tour. Not a horrible live band but they totally punched the clock. No improvisational elements to their show at all. Worse yet, everyone in that band is a walking reinforcement of the Ivy League preppie asshole stereotype. Love that first record so it pains me to poop on your list. Sincerely sorry.

As a postscript, my cousin checked them out in Amsterdam between the time I saw them in SC and the the time I saw them in Knoxville. He said they were great but were bitching and fighting with each other the entire time that they weren't on stage. Nicholas Mimikakis left the band immediately following that tour.

interesting comments on dexateens.

john smith is a fucking witch with his guitar. dude can rip it up. great vocals and tremedous musical iq. he and elliott were born to write, sing and play together. near impossible to carry on after that loss.

they made a pretty good go of it after he left. toured pretty heavily for another yearish. what happened to the record in the can?

i am hopeful that elliott has a great solo record or 2 ahead of him. love destroy me....don't know how many dexateens were on that. sounds like he did it at home on the very, very lo-fi side of things. i think it's brilliant.

their best live line up was with lee baines 3, smith, elliott on the stage.

just my opinion.
