Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

As a diehard fan of Guadalcanal Diary I tried to keep up with all of their post-breakup doings back in the 90's. Looking back at it now, I have to wonder how I was able to keep up with them at all considering all that we have at our disposal these days with the innerwebs. Anyway, I heard somewhere that Guadalcanal Diary guitarist Jeff Walls had formed a new group called Hillbilly Frankenstein. During a trip to Atlanta around '95 or so to see Page & Plant (with Rusted Root) at the Omni, I made my second ever trip to Athens and stopped in one of the Wuxtry Records locations. Lo and behold they had a copy of Hillbilly Frankenstein's lone release in stock on cassette, Hypnotica! which I immediately snatched up. Seems they also played the first Sleazefest at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill back in '94. I didn't make it to one of those until around '97. I managed to attend one other one after that before they stopped having it. Here's a clip of Hillbilly Frankenstein performing during that first Sleazefest way back when the 506 still had a Go-Go cage. This is taken from the Sleazefest movie. If you so desire, you can watch the whole thing (highly recommended) here. Those were the days my friend...

I've been an Emmylou Harris fan for a long, long time but I honestly have no recollection of her big hair years yet here it is for all the world to see. The music in this clip isn't bad either.

Starts with Emmylou and The Angel Band (Carl Jackson, Emory Gordy, Vince Gill) then Emmylou introduces the New Grass Revival, followed by her introducing Ricky Skaggs who is subsequently joined by Bill Monroe. Clip ends with them all together and Bill and Emmylou doing a bit of dancing.

The Who have done some brand new videos for a lot of their old songs, here's a couple of them. In the clip for "Baba O' Riley" I could have sworn I spotted Jerry Rubin in what appears to be footage from Woodstock.

The latest entry in The Independent's Simple Music Series is from Chip Robinson, an artist I've championed here on many occasion not just for his solo work but also for his work with the Backsliders. A legendary (at least in some circles) band that was neck and neck with Whiskeytown, Six String Drag, the Two Dollar Pistols and others in the local alt.country scene in the Triangle area of North Carolina back in the 90's. If you're curious to know more about the Backsliders, be sure to follow this link to the article that accompanies this week's entry in the Simple Music Series which includes links to some archival articles about the band. For anyone that may be curious, the songs performed in this clip are "Angelita" by the Backsliders, "Bells" by the Carneys (written by Jeffrey Dean Foster of that band, the Right Profile and the Pinetops, he also has a solo career) and "The One I Love" by David Gray which Chip briefly references before kicking back into "Angelita". For those of you in the Triangle area, Chip will be doing a second show with the "Howell/Robinson Quartet" at the Pour House in Raleigh on Saturday, December 15th. The Howell/Robinson Quartet is essentially the Backsliders (Chip, Steve Howell [vocals/lead guitar], Danny Kurtz [bass] and Jeff Dennis [drums]) minus lead guitarist Brad Rice (Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Tift Merritt, Keith Urban, etc.) who now resides in Austin. I saw them play their first show together (with this, the original lineup) last month at Slim's in Raleigh since a benefit for Alejandro Escovedo back in 2003. To say it was off the hook would be putting it lightly. Right after the last song before the encore, Jeff Dennis jumped up from behind his kit, seized the mic and said, "David Menconi needs to write a book about THAT shit!!" That wasn't sour grapes, it was the truth. The fact that the Backsliders were not better known is nothing short of fucking criminal. If you have any doubt as to their prowess as a live band, I urge you to seek out their song "Yep!" from the live EP called From Raleigh, NC.

Someone posted this from a Guy Clark show in Nashville, which I attended, a couple weeks ago. It is a new song called "El Coyote" and he wrote it about a truck driver who abandons a group of Mexican immigrants in a trailer after something spooks him. The driver splits and leaves the men to die.

Thanks for that. Not sure where I read it (maybe here) but I understand he's doing 2-3 new songs in concert. Hopefully that means a new record isn't too far in the offing.

Dan Penn backed up by Donnie Fritts and The Decoys doing "Dark End Of The Street" last month in Nashville. Dan is still amazing. (David Hood on far left) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IUXRuHzwoQ
