What to do?
Skynyrd has announced a 2 night run at the Florida Theater in Jax, Feb 12 & 13.
The first night they will be playing all of "Pronounced" along with other cuts.
The second night they will do all of "Second Helping" + others.
So I guess you can see my dilemma.
I have suggested we just do the 14th in Athens but the ole lady isn't big on one night stands.
I guess the sensible thing to do would be waiting for the DVD to come out.

Skynyrd postponed due to heart surgery and we still didn't make it to home coming :(

Thanks for the link Swamp.

I don't really consider the Skynyrd that's on the road today to be Skynyrd.

Don't think I've ever seen this before, an alternate cover for Street Survivors (or more accurately, an outtake). On another note, Allen Collins would have been 63 today.

Great article but people get real upset when you try to explain to them that stuff. "Tell the truth"

Same thing with artists like Jimmy Buffett who's "new stuff is nothing like the old stuff" to paraphrase Todd Snider.

First I've heard of this new documentary about Skynyrd which is out now on DVD. The description below comes from Amazon. I've also included a review of the documentary from Pop Matters (which is how I found out about the doc) that includes at least a couple factual errors. Contrary to what many believe, "Free Bird" was not written about Duane Allman. The first line of the song was inspired by something Allen Collins' future wife Kathy had said to him. In concert, the song was often dedicated to Duane Allman (and Berry Oakley) but was not written for or about him. The author says the Rossington Collins Band released three albums, to the best of my knowledge, there were only two. Towards the end of the review there's some speculation about the band reuniting a decade on with Al Kooper and Ed King and getting together with some "outside riders" which would have somehow led to "MTV glory". I'm not really sure what any of that means.
As for the clip below, only Bob Burns, Ed King and Artimus Pyle from Skynyrd appear. The background music is some sort of generic Southern rock which would indicate the filmmakers were unable to obtain rights to use any of Skynyrd's music (though I don't know that for sure). As a diehard Skynyrd fan, I am interested in seeing the movie but doubt I would pay for it. I agree that a definitive documentary that includes input from all the members will likely never be made but going just by the clip below, this doesn't appear to be definitive in any sense of the word. What we do have are the two VH1 specials, Behind the Music and VH1 Uncivil War (which both include interviews with band members past and present) and the segment on Skynyrd that was featured as part of the CMT series American Revolutions: Southern Rock. After the Uncivil War special aired, it came to light that the interviewer (Jake Tapper) intentionally pitted the individual members against each other which may have made for some compelling tabloid-style television but didn't really do the Skynyrd story justice. Not a film but there's also the controversial Spin article from April of 1999 penned by Mark Schone called Encore From Hell that, while scathing, reportedly "told some truth".

When Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged onto the world stage in 1973, it was the result of a collective determination; the group had struggled and fought to gain real recognition ever since their formation eight years before. And although they were initially identified, both in the music industry and in the media, as just another act in the then booming Southern Rock movement, it became quickly apparent that not only were Skynyrd a distinctly individual collective, but also they had the potential to become one of the finest rock bands in history. Led by the headstrong and domineering Ronnie Van Zant, a tough, blue collar brawler with his powerful stage presence, distinctive vocals and gritty, honest lyrics, his energy and vision propelled the group until its tragic end in 1977. This film revisits the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd in a manner previously unattempted. Using a mixture of seldom seen film, new and archive interviews, contributions from an esteemed panel of members past and present as well as those closest to the group, plus location shoots, rare photographs, news reports and the most harrowing albeit fascinating first-hand description of the fateful 1977 plane crash which bought an end to the original line-up, this programme is set to become the standard documentary work on this legendary band.

Found this previously unseen footage from '87 last night from when they were rehearsing just prior to the Tribute Tour getting underway. Interesting to note several things here, like how all but two are original members and how well they seem to be getting along despite the absence of Artimus and King in the current band. Also, the fact that the reunion was only supposed to last as long as the Tribute Tour. I never saw the original band but did see the reunited version something like four times up until The Last Rebel tour when they shared a bill with Joe Walsh, Damn Yankees and Drivin' n' Cryin' at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC in '93. Out of those, my favorite was the first one, which would have been the Tribute Tour in Charlotte just a day or so shy of the 10th anniversary of the plane crash. That was back when Johnny Van Zant wasn't singing "Free Bird", the audience sang it.

Ran into Johnny pumping gas at the shell station yesterday. I wouldn't have said any thing to him but he spoke to me first calling me "Sir".
At which point I explained I wasn't much older than him and that my wife had gone to school with him. Then he started bitchin' about how
his wife never put gas in her car (a black escalade) and that's why he was up there. "Women" we both sighed Then we wished each other a
happy new year and I drove away.

I'm guessing that came out of rehearsals for when they did Pronounced and Second Helping back-to-back last year.

Indeed, I saw it on the shelves the other day but I doubt I ever purchase it. With all due respect, I'd rather listen to the original studio albums. Cool that they did it I guess but it's just further evidence to me that post-crash Skynyrd is more about banking on the past.

I remember it well. There were only two times I recall when one of the clerks at Camelot Music in Goldsboro, NC (where I bought most of my music growing up) had to bust open a box to get a new record out for me on the day of release. One was Street Survivors, the other was Kiss Alive II. I bought plenty of records on the day of release but those are the only two occasions I can remember when I got to be the first person in town to own them.

Cutting open the box to get your record = cool.
