Quicklists XXIII: Top 5 Died Too Soon

Post by Smitty »

(stole this from ninebullets.net - they put it up in honor of Dec 8 being the anniversary of John Lennon and Dimebag Darrell Abbott's deaths)

1. Vic Chesnutt
2. Ronnie Van Zant/Steve&Cassie Gaines
3. Gram Parsons
4. Buddy Holly
5. Lowell George

I'm leaving out my lord & savior Hank Williams, because I think (when it comes to his legend/legacy) he went out at exactly the right time, and having studied his life so closely, I can't imagine him going on much longer in the shape he was in.

1: Buddy Holly
2: Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve and Cassie Gaines
3: Pete DeFrietas -- He was the drummer for Echo and The Bunnymen. IMO, one of the best drummers ever. He died in a motorcycle crash around 1989, 1990.
4: Jimi Hendrix -- He would have been awesome playing some of the styles that became popular in the seventies like prog rock or jazz fusion.
5: Gram Parsons

There are others who died that I didn't mention. Although I miss Lennon tremendously, his legacy was pretty well secured by the time of his death. The ones I mentioned are people who, IMO, never really finished what they set out to do or could have done.

Yeah, definitely Jimi Hendrix. I love the direction he was going in with Band of Gypsys and apparently he had plans to work with Funkadelic--would have loved to hear that collaberation.

Great call Gator. Don't forget Pete Farndon the bass player. They both died right after that second record. Talk about a band getting ripped in half.

I thought about mentioning Pete Farndon but he had already been kicked out of the band for quite some time before he died. He was a great bass player and I wonder if he had gotten his shit together if Chrissie would have taken him back. Such a great fucking band that unfortunately only have 2 albums to their credit.

I didn't know that. Listen to the bass line in Mystery Achievement, that's all you need to know about Farndon.

Losing Buddy Holly was a pretty big blow because he had some pretty innovative plans. At the time of his death he was in the process of forming his own record label. He was going to build a studio in Lubbock, Texas. He already had verbal commitments from Eddie Cochran, Richie Valens and Waylon Jennings. If that plane hadn't gone down the entire outlaw country movement might have started a decade earlier. After his experience in Nashville, Holly had some pretty strong opinions about what was wrong with the music biz and was a firm advocate of the artists taking control from the producers and publishers.

a new discovery for me, but Gary Stewart - he would've been deserving of a comeback, and with his catalog/life story he could've had cult status
