He moved there in the 80's. He is originally from Lincoln Nebraska. He was in a band in Athens for a time with Michael Stipe's sister.

I love all the bands on the Athen's inside/out album.

I was going to name them but I think they were actually based out of Marietta. On the other hand when I caught a Jason Ringenberg solo set during Athfest a few back he covered Trail of Tears as a shout out to the days of old when the likes of GD roamed the local watering holes.

I know Dave Marr is an Athens stalwart now, but weren't the Star Room Boys based out of Atlanta?

When I met GC, back in 1985, I believe they were living in Athens, though I might be wrong. Lots of bands formed elsewhere and moved to Athens to be part of that music community.

I will also mention Mitch Easter. He produced a lot of bands and those records gave the Athens scene national exposure in the early eighties. His contributions behind the board are very important.

Mitch Easter was a huge part of my eighties listening, and while not from Athens, Let's Active was a damned good band.

The one and only time I ever saw Let's Active was opening for R.E.M. at Duke back in '86. It was Mitch's birthday so all of R.E.M. came out to sit in on a cover of "Hush" at the end of Let's Active's set. Hard to believe but I never saw Mitch in concert again until just a few years ago, I try to catch him as often as I can when he plays out these days. At one show last year at The Pinhook in Durham he opened with In the Court of the Crimson King right out of the fucking blue.
