Great show in Buffalo last night, band was in fine form. About 5 songs in they plugged the new record and proceeded to play the whole thing in proper track order, then finished with the must dos & a 2 song encore. Ortman complimented my T before the show & he manned the merch table after the show, ringing up pretty good business it looked. Picked up the CD while awaiting vinyl delivery delay & Brian signed it in the pizza joint across the street about a half hour after this picture was taken.

My first ever youtube upload: edit proper HD link

Mark Olson was interesting, the whole set was with his Norweigian wife Ingunn. I really liked some of the songs and harmonically they're very good together & playing some unique instruments. He didn't do a single Jayhawks song. Maybe not the best pairing for Bottle Rockets?? We were right up front and enjoyed the experience, but I can imagine a lot of talking and lack of attention further back in the room.

Thanks for the tip. I might have to arrive fashionably late for this one.

Blistering set by the B Rox last night. Loud, no frills rock and roll on a small stage. One great song after another, three- and four-minute bursts of jangly twangy guitar rock. Like the show 3mile saw, they played the entire new record in order mid way thru the show. Highlights from the new record were Dog, Ship it on the Frisco and Shape of a Wheel which Henneman introduced by saying "if there was ever a song that summed up the Bottle Rockets, this is it." And of course Building Chryslers which people were shouting for all night and which has overtaken Isbell's Children of Children as Beast of the Year. Fucking awesome watching them jam that song from 10 feet away. Apart from the new record, it was the best of the bottle rockets: Radar Gun? Check! Welfare Music? Check! Indianapolis? Check! Smoking 100's? Check! Thousand Dollar Car? Check! Gravity Fails? Check! And so on. Henneman's Rickenbackers were channeling Tom Petty all night long so it was only fitting that he closed the night with a cover of TP's Listen to Her Heart. Great time for a Sunday night.

Mark Olson's opening set was... interesting. He was with his sexy Norwegian wife Ingunn and they played all kinds of weird stringed instruments and bongos. Their songs sounded cathartic, dreamy and meditation-like. He did manage to fit in a few Jayhawks tunes including Blue which was nice. I'd give them a thumbs up.

I guess you can't be fashionable even when you try.

This song takes on new significance for me. Lost two beloveds inside of 18 months, but got a new guy recently, Rooney, mini Australian Shepherd...he's my dawg

Rick Cornell paired this with Slobberbone's "Gimme Back My Dog" on his new Ragged Gloryland radio show recently. Perfect fit.

Here's a link to a two part Brian Henneman interview that popped up last month. If you have an hour to spare it is well worth your time. Some great insight and stories.

This popped up earlier today. G.E. Smith tells about how he tried to get the Bottle Rockets on Saturday night Live but was told they weren't photogenic enough.

Watching for the second time.
I love how you get to see John Horton really showcased. I'm convinced that there aren't many guitar players working today who are better.
Also great to see and hear the mysterious Scott Taylor. The political commentary by he and Brian in the doc is perfect, IMO.

4 part interview with Robert Kearns, formerly of the Bottle Rockets (he left in 2005). Like Audley Freed (Cry of Love, Black Crowes, Frampton, Dixie Chicks, etc.), Robert got his start in a North Carolina based cover band called Sidewinder. In addition to the Bottle Rockets, he's also been in Cry of Love and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He's currently a member of Sheryl Crow's band along with Audley. They also perform together in a band called Big Hat.
