Never heard that Martha Wainwright tune, but that figures to be right at the top of the list. Yikes!

Dylan's got quite a few of 'em. Idiot Wind would be another ("you're an idiot babe, it's a wonder you can even breathe").

I'll think of a bunch more as soon as i post this, lol.

Can't list the Sex Pistols' "new york" without also listing Johnny Thunders' response - "London Boys" by the Heartbreakers.

oh, and gotta second double talkin' jive from the opening post...gn'r did a bunch of great "diss songs" although axl rose had a tendency to go overboard that ruined a few of them (get in the ring, anyone?). izzy stradlin was much better at it (you ain't the first).

the sad part is that it's actually a pretty kickass song until axl goes mad...I seem to remember listening to a demo of (back when gnr was my favourite band) without all the nonsense that was pretty awesome. haven't listened to the actual version (or any version) in years though. speaking of gnr demos, the '86 don't cry demo is miles and miles better than the two versions that were released on the illusions albums...they need to re-release appetite with a bonus disc of the recordings of the illusions tunes that were recorded back then too like don't cry, you could be mine etc. would be awesome. ain't gonna happen.

Used To Love Her?

well, yeah in a way. except that's more of a joke song (even if it's not always taken as that)...but it's a bit tongue in cheek, whereas axl never seemed to have that sense of irony.

Greatest irony in rock and roll is Mick Jagger singing back up on this song, when it is rumored to be about him.

I think Mick wins "I bet you think this song is about you, don't you?", well, yes the song was about him.

I always thought "You're So Vain" was the WORST diss song.

The song IS about him!

Though I am not sure that it quite reaches the level of a diss, Jason Isbell's "Sunstroke" has always struck me as his commentary on leaving DBT.

I remember John Fogerty had a song on his Centerfield record called Zanz Can't Dance about his former manager and he had to reissue the record and call it Vanz Can't Dance after the guy sued him for it. Or something like that.

We got to 26 posts before "Dead Flowers" was mentioned.

I guess that's more of a "fuck you" song.

Perhaps "Come Pick Me Up" by Ryan Adams?

Tacoma - Tim Barry

There's 3 minutes of story before the song starts on this video.

I figured out the youtube thing so I edited this post to show the video properly.

Hearing this song made me realize it was okay to remove people from my life. I removed several and my life has had much less drama since. My friend's friend's don't have to be my friends.

If Tomorrow Never Comes - Todd Snider (If you can steal from me, I can steal from you - directed at Kent Blazy/Garth Brooks)
Foolish Young Bastard - Patterson Hood (even if it's not really mean-spirited)
Walking Around Sense - Patterson Hood (Hood writing a diss track towards Courtney Love... surreal. You could make a mixtape of Courtney Love dissing songs)
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrisette
Hank III - Grand Ole Opry Ain't So Grand/If You Can't Help Your Own/Dick in Dixie (Cunt in Country)/Not Everybody Likes Us (sample lyrics: Kid Rock don't come from where I come from: Yeah, it's true, he's a Yank, he ain't no son of Hank: If you even thought so, god-damn, you're fucking dumb ) etc
Hank Williams - Mind Your Own Business
