The Queen of Soul 1942-2018
Aretha Franklin passed away today at the age of 76. R.I.P. to the lady with that sweet sweet voice. One of my favorite female vocalists ever.

Catch it while you can! It typically disappears quickly:

I had the great privilege to see her rehearse and perform. I worked on the Oprah Winfrey Show for two seasons, during a run where there were a lot of musicians and actors booked on the show.
She was, of course, brilliant. However, some asshole back in the 70’s convinced her that air conditioning was bad for her voice, so we had to turn it off for her rehearsal and the taping of her show. Imagine a 100’ x 100’ studio with 300 audience members, 25 crew people, and 400 studio lights and no air conditioning

And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

total badass.
Re: The Queen of Soul 1942-2018
If you think your heart can handle it, seek out her performance of Natural Woman at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors of Carole King.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

I'm not embarrassed at all. It's one of the best comedies/musicals ever made, my favorite movie of all-time, and her performance is awesome.Clams wrote:I'm embarrassed to admit it, but me too.Iowan wrote:This will be my enduring memory of her.Clams wrote:

I saw that movie while I was on a Mission From Jah To Chicago. I hitchhiked into the city that afternoon with a film processing delivery guy who whipped through the underground sections of downtown at frightening speed. By the end of the day, I'd seen that movie for the first time just around the corner from the hotel which got destroyed. It was a damn good day.Iowan wrote:Clams wrote:This will be my enduring memory of her.Clams wrote:I'm not embarrassed at all. And now, to get back on topic, Patterson weighs in on The Bitter Southerner.

Re: The Queen of Soul 1942-2018
almost makes me shed a tear. The last Aretha track I played last night almost made me shed a tear as well- "Tracks of My Tears" from Soul '69. Way way way overused word these days but I will say it here: Powerful.John A Arkansawyer wrote:And now, to get back on topic, Patterson weighs in on The Bitter
