John Neff

Post by Tequila Cowboy »

Saw John play last night for the first time since he left DBT. He was playing with the Flint Hill Specials as a one off. Damn that man can play the pedal steel. It's not that I had forgotten it's just that I didn't quite remember how good he was.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Dude's got talent. No doubt about that.

What he does on "Birthday Boy" makes 'it' move.

I'm not sure. We spoke to him for a bit but mostly about his dog to be honest. He was sitting in with these guys who don't play very often.

I will forever miss his playing with DBT. The pedal steel on Decoration Day (the record, obviously) were one of the things that sealed the deal for my DBT fandom. Whatever happened behind the scenes sucks.

I really like the current line-up, but I'd also like to hear Neff on records and for him to play some dates on occasion. I don't know exactly what happened either and I don't care for the end result of no Neff no how no way.

I'm with Smitty. Neff's pedal steel took a bunch of their songs to a whole different sonic level. World of Hurt, Living Bubba, Heathens, Love Like This, etc.

Ditto both of these posts. I'll also add that A Ghost to Most, while still a great song, hasnt been the same since Neff quit.

Too bad he burned the bridge by quitting via email. I would love to see him come back.

I too miss Neff's pedal steel.

A couple/few/whatever years after I was really getting into the DBT's (this was early 00's), Frank Black had his Catholics project really ramping up and released 2 brilliant albums on the same day ("Black Letter Days" & "Devil's Workshop"). The pedal steel playing on some of the selections from those records just put those songs straight over the top. Amazing. ("Chip Away Boy", "End of Miles" - for a couple of great examples). Just as I could never imagine those tunes without the pedal steel - I really miss it in many DBTs songs as well.

I guess he burned that bridge, as has been mentioned, but I sure do wish he would/could at least play on the records.

I REALLY miss Neff's pedal steel playing. I miss the pedal steel period

I never felt his guitar playing had enough bite with DBT, but still liked his playing. I haven't seen that many shows, only local, so maybe the sound was never quiet right.

Thanks for posting, I sure hope to hear
more from him in the future

FWIW, the best DBT show I've ever seen was post-Neff.

That said, I always loved his contributions.

Jumped down this old rabbit hole last weekend - interesting to revisit, but what a weird, not-so-pleasant thread and memory.

But I listened to Smitty's Neff pedal steel Spotify list for the first time. The odd thing was, while I looooove pedal steel, to MY ears, the DBT work on the list was by far the most enjoyable. Not sure what that says, if anything.

The last time we saw John we had gone over to the pan handle to see Eye Candy. After the show we went back to their room to party. 45 minutes later the hotel staff was saying we couldn't party in the room any more. So we moved the party down to the beach in front of the hotel. About 45 minutes later they came and told us we had to move down the beach Good times.

I saw Neff with Bloodkin a couple of years ago at the Montgomery Riverfront Amp. Free show. Good times. Neff and Danny played great to a small crowd.

We just have streaming services and antennae tv. Tonight I was flipping channels and stumbled across something intriguing. I heard the song “Jessica” on PBS and noticed Chuck Levall playing piano backed by a violinist and classical music ensemble. I stopped flipping channels, but sadly this was the last song of the program. As the show ended, I said to my wife, “honey, there’s John Neff in the background”, and sure enough I saw his name in the credits a few seconds later.
