Super 8

Post by Miallmon »

I need some clarification here:
1. What is a trimmer?
2. Was medical attention summoned because of injuries sustained from the madman with the fungo bat or just from partying too hard?
3. Did the victim suffer a heart attack?
Any clarification on these would be helpful

1. It's "Tremor in a t-shirt, telling me her heart hurt." Just picture a girl sobbing so hard that her body is shaking. What a line.

2 & 3. I think the narrator was so intoxicated that he started having breathing problems in his sleep. Alcohol is a depressant and alcohol poisoning does lead to breathing issues especially when sleeping. So they "slapped him back to life" to wake him up and they gave him a bunch of Pedialyte to get him hydrated.

1. A Trimmer is slang for a girl. Usually a smaller sexy girl.
Plural for Trimmer is not Trimmers, but rather Trim. Used in a sentence: "If I was in a band I bet I would get a lot of Trim."
At least that's how we roll up North.
"Allman Brother's up and windows down." LB3

Official lyric is "tremor", which makes sense for a sobbing heartbroken girl. However, the similarity to "trimmer" could also be intentional, adding yet another layer to an already fantastic line.

BTW, I have never heard the singular "trimmer." I've heard "trim" and wondered if "trimmer" was a southern variation, or if he was saying "tremor", which would make sense in the case of a girl sobbing so hard about her heartbreak that she was shaking.

Then I saw the CD lyric sheet says "tremor", but if "trimmer" is indeed a singular slang term for "trim", then the added allusion makes that line even more awesome.

I saw Jason in Akron last night and he closed his main set with Super 8. People were screaming for it throughout the show too. It's a ton of fun live, especially with addition of rip-roaring guitar solos. And each and every trimmer was a dancing tremor during that song. Ha. But seriously, I saw a lot of young women not only singling along, but flat out DANCING along to that song. I'm not used to people dancing like that at an Isbell show.

I have a feeling that one's going to be a live staple for years to come. Definitely a crowd-pleaser.

He rocked it out in KC When he was here last week. I think it will be his "Casino Queen" for a long time. Dual guitars were great.

The first time I heard the record I thought this track stuck out like a sore thumb. Not that I didn't like it, I just thought it didn't quite fit. Yeah, I was wrong. While not my favorite song on the record it's one I crank to 11 every time it comes on. Might be the best pure rocker Jason has ever written (Try comes in a close second).

Is Decoration Day a pure rocker? I think its close. Also, I know you aren't a fan, but I'd "Never Gonna Change" right there.

Super 8 is a great song though.

I'd call Decoration Day a mid tempo number myself, but it does rock as it gets rolling. If you include it, sure, that's the best one. NGC just doesn't do a whole lot for me, but I realize that's a minority opinion. I have some of those. Try saying you don't like watermelon at a farmer's market in Mississippi...

I'm warming up to Super 8, but I don't think it's in the same league as NGC, John Henry, Try, Go It Alone, or even Good.

John Henry.

Wouldn't have initially qualified it as a "rocker", but I fucking love that one, and yeah, it probably is a rocker. One of my favorite Isbell songs, and one of the more underrated tracks in his canon.

Good call.

Has Isbell ever shed any light on why John Henry has never been a regular part of his post-DBT repertoire? I know he's played it at a few solo acoustic shows, but I miss hearing it given the full band treatment.
