The wheels are spinning, but may have to opt for the less desirable but more convenient 930 club option.

Well, since Clams and Van are in, I'm now leaning towards World Cafe. I'll probably bring the boys and the rest of the Mechanicsburg contingent.

I'd like to make this show! (But if I can't, it's totally Clams' fault)

A couple of questions---

It looked like World Cafe Live is a half mile from the train station so this shouldn't be hard to get to--just checking to see if that's the correct venue? It looks like I can take the train down after work and be there in plenty of time.

Also, did you guys all get GA tix? There is a a seating chart behind the GA area but the ticketing is kinda weird. It keeps automatically adding the premium 10$ fee.

Yes that's the correct venue and yes you can walk from the train station.

No, you do not want or need seats. Get the GA's.

It's a great, great venue. Best in the city, probably.

Nice little preview in today's Inquirer...

Image

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

With only three previous solo albums - the most recent is 2011's excellent Here We Rest - it might seem a little early for Jason Isbell to be releasing a live set such as the current Live From Alabama. But before going solo, the 33-year-old Alabama guitarist spent six years as the third songwriting wheel to the Patterson Hood-Mike Cooley tandem in Southern rock standouts Drive By Truckers. So it turns out that Live From Alabama is stacked with sharply detailed Isbell-penned tunes that deftly navigate the rock-country divide - like "The Blue," from Isbell and the 400's 2009 solo album, or "Danko/Manuel," from the Truckers' 2004 The Dirty South. So you'd think he wouldn't need to include covers like Candi Staton's "Heart on a String" or Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane." Good thing he did, though: The former is a most effective vehicle for the horn section that pumps up the 400 Unit on the home-turf gig, and, while "Hurricane" may not quite measure up to Youngian standards, it still unleashes a mighty wind.

I'll be there with my usual crew. My boys and Mr. Balam Acab. It will be the first time my boys will see Jason and the 400 Unit as a headliner.

What time is the pregame? Can we eat there if we have GA standing tickets?

No need to pregame elsewhere. Just go to World Cafe Live. The show is downstairs. If downstairs isn't open yet, then just go to the upstairs bar.
Pretty sure you can order food downstairs at the bar. If you are there early, you can always eat upstairs.

Chances are, if you get there early enough to eat upstairs, Jason and crew will be their for their pre-game meal. When I saw Patterson their in September he was upstairs eating and drinking with the band. Same with Alabama Shakes. Actually, the upstairs is pretty good for food and drink, they serve Blue Coat gin which makes for a great martini.

Pay the extra money and take Amtrak. New Jersey Transit will put you on a slow train that makes every stop between NYC and Trenton. Then you switch to another slow train that makes every stop between Trenton and Philadelphia. An Amtrak regional makes few stops, goes 120 mph and you won't have to switch trains.

Rev--Amtrak is 73$ for a 1 hour ride. NJ Transit is 11.50 for a 2 hour ride. Unless you're picking me up on your harley with that aerodynamic mullet, I'm taking NJ Transit..

ps..are you going? :D

The Pennsyvanian is $51 from New York Penn to Philly. The NJT fare only gets you to Trenton. Then you pay another seven bucks for SEPTA to Philly.

Great show last night. All the usual suspects were in attendance and it was good to see everyone. The band looked and sounded great. They've developed this full, lush sound - especially Amanda's fiddle and Derry's keyboards. And every single note and chord from Jason's guitar rang through so clearly - just perfect sound on every song. As mentioned elsewhere, sobriety really seems to fit the 400 Unit. The bottle may be gone but Jason was smiling all night and really seemed locked in and his guitar playing is just so smooth. The setlist seemed pretty standard from his other recent shows - that was fine with me since I hadn't seen him in a while, but was probably a disappointment to people like Penny Lane and Bill who have seen multiple shows lately. All in all, a great Monday night.

Here are some more pics I took with my phone...
