DBT tracks week # 18 - Don't Be In Love Around Me

Post by Clams »

A smokin' gem off of Alabama Ass Whuppin. At some point in our lives be it past or present, we can all relate to this one.

Anyone who doesn't have AAW and wants an mp3 of this song, send me a PM. Or maybe Smitty can repost his download link to the entire record (hint hint).

I'm not in the mood to see you looking at each other
Like you're looking at each other right now.
Cuddling up close to your significant other,
while another night alone is coming down.

I'm glad to see that the two of you
got so much about each other that agrees.
But don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.

I don't want to hear about fun dates and soul mates
while I sit and contemplate alone.
You'll be dropping acid and making love in the moonlight,
while I'm banging on this guitar and getting stoned.

And I'm glad you're doing well, but please do it somewhere else,
Cause it's something that I just can't bear to see.
Don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.

Don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.
Don't be in love around me.

Don't be in love around me.
Everyone needs a friend, everyone needs a fuck

you can find AAW at http://welfare-music.blogspot.com/search/label/DBT ;)
Love this song - Patterson said it was his attempt at writing a bluegrass song

It's a fun song, but wouldn't rank that high for me on my list of favorite DBT songs.

It fits well on AAW, and is a nice blast of energy, but just doesn't stick with me.

What he said. I do find it interesting that acid is associated w/ good times and making love w/ soul mates and all that while pot is associated w/ loneliness and depression.

I never thought of this song as having even an ounce of bluegrass. I always thought of it as one of the songs people (read: dime in the gutter) are alluding to when they call AAW a "punk" record.

I feel the same way - I believe it's in the liner notes to AAW where Pat says that - my favorite version is from the Live at Dick Coopers' DVD

Almost to a "t" everyone I know that's enjoyed a good psych trip from time to time is an extroverted or very social person, and it was always done with others. Pot seems to lend itself more to just locking yourself in your room and losin' yo head. I guess these associations make sense to me.

Since the first time I heard this song, it's been one of my favorites. Some nights back when they first started playing it, I and the music reached an exuberant fury that's rarely been repeated. I always loved it best as a heavy punk fuck you, but I've enjoy it in just about any of the many forms it's taken. It's a beautiful example of my emotions at the time being deeply tied to a Patterson turn of a phrase - "I'm glad you're doing well but please do it someplace else" ranks up there in the top twenty.

Patterson wrote: I wrote this one the same day as a song called "Miss Me Gone" (which is on my solo record Killers and Stars).
Fall of 1992, Auburn Alabama. Not a particularly happy time.
At that time, Cooley and I were playing from time to time in a duo called Virgil Kane.
It was a shitty time. We were broke and pretty down and out.
On the good side, since we had nothing else to do, we were very prolific.
I wrote over 200 songs a year in 91 and 92. 150 in 93 and over 100 in 94.
Nine Bullets came from that era too.

DBT originally recorded DBILAM as a demo for Pizza Deliverance and later a live version that was released on Alabama Ass Whuppin'.
