On the Road Again - Spring 2023

Post by beantownbubba »

The boys are back on the road playing a whole bunch of shows in a whole bunch of places over the next month-ish. Coming off their brilliant run of HHC shows, they will hopefully be in peak form. Have fun all you lucky show-goers.

Ill be there Saturday night in DC and the following Saturday at the first ever Sing Us Home festival (DBT, Craig Finn, Kathleen Edwards,Dave Hause, Lydia Loveless) in Manayunk which is 5 minutes from my house and is a neighborhood that in a million years would never have entered my mind if I were making a list of places DBT might play. Can't wait.

I've argued before that the set list is not necessarily the best proof of the quality of a rock show but based on that set list it seems like the band was clicking on all cylinders last nite.

Kinda kills me that I had to miss the Brown's Island show, but alas I couldn't muster the energy to get down to RVA after a transatlantic flight that landed earlier that afternoon.

Hearing rumors of Charlottesville on 9/30 at the Paramount for those in the area...

The Rock Show at The Paramount. Hm. I guess we are all getting older. It'll sound great.

This was the Sunday 9:30 Club show. Just great, all the way through. Possibly the best version of "Feb. 14" I've ever heard; Lydia just KILLED it.

A roaring "Drag the Lake Charlie". "Every Single Storied Flameout" continuing, even without the horns, to be a highlight of any show where it's played. "The Driver" developing an even heavier and darker atmosphere than on the already abyss-like version from the record (the repetition of the main riff gets grungier each time). One thing that stood out was Cooley's extraordinarily soulful guitar licks on "Rosemary...", making it just swing.

Great shows.

How could this evening NOT be special? Patterson especially seemed moved the entire evening; almost singing with a catch in his throat, and singing well.

PH pulled out some relative rarities such as "Wilder Days" off of Club XII and an affecting "Sands of Iwo Jima". Cooley stayed relatively close to his recent rotation, but "Sounds Better in the Song" has taken on even greater depth of feeling, and the evening's version of "Where the Devil Don't Stay" was crushing.

A magic evening on Plochmann Road. Thanks to Tyler for keeping the setlist. I did, too, after asking him, but I do love me a good redundancy!

Slightly out of order, but I got excited, and just really want to spend my life making Bubba happy. (Platonically).

Something extraordinary has happened to "Putting People on the Moon". It's even more wild and terrifying than the versions from "It's Great to Be Alive!" or the incredible version from the 2/29/2020 9:30 Club show. It's a total show-stopper, and they played it here FOURTH.

It speaks to the power of the rest of the evening that it was not a come-down for the remaining 2+ hours. The highlights for me were "Every Single Storied Flameout" (IBID), a rollicking "Welcome 2 Club XIII", a haunted "Goode's Field Road", "A Ghost to Most" still fighting with "ESSF" for the top spot in my heart, and finally the killer finale pairing of "Shut Up and Get on the Plane" and "Angels and Fuselage".

I know some around the band felt a little let down after the emotional highs of the Richmond show, and Wes being such a real presence there, but it was hard to tell from audience side. They are playing at an extraordinarily high level at the moment.

I was at this show and last Saturday night and had a great time. It had been over a year since my last DBT show and it was great fun to see so many of our fellow heathens and to catch the band at the 930 Club which is clearly one of their favorite venues. I was up front right behind Luke and Sarah and thought the sound was superb. The setlist was heavy on SRO which is always a good thing and a few of the songs, especially from Patterson, were up there with the best versions I've heard. The Sign of the Times interlude in the middle of Hell No was especially ferocious as was PPOTM as Glen noted above. Next up is the Sing Us Home Festival this weekend in (of all places) the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia. Hard to believe I've been at this DBT thing for over 15 years.

Most of the usual NYC suspects will be there plus some special guest stars, e.g. Lorna. I don't know what their pregame plans are.
