Re: HeAthens Homecoming 3/29-4/1 2023
We're back in an AirBnB this year. This is 11 for us and I think we've stayed in an AirBnB 6 of those years. We're staying in University Towers near Target and Starbucks on Broad St, the 4th time we've stayed there. With all fees considered, it was about $110 more total over 4 nights than the Holiday Inn Express. It's maybe $50-$75 more than it was the last time we stayed there (2020). Worth it to us for a 2 bedroom apartment. Hotel rooms get a bit cramped when you're staying 5 days/4 nights.beantownbubba wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 10:31 amPS If your Air BnB decision was price related, have you and others here noticed a big increase in AirBnB prices generally over, say, the past 6 or 8 months? We have.

That should not be a problem. Several people bring beers from their area and we all have a great time sipping on some new beers, laughing, and catching up. It often goes on for a few hours with people coming and going.

As per my usual luck with any intercontinental air travel there are hiccups also this year. I was scheduled to arrive Athens this afternoon, but due to ongoing workers strike at German airports (I’m going via Frankfurt) my flights have been rescheduled to tomorrow. I am checked in on tomorrows flights and the Groome shuttle is booked.

Rolank & 305: I get into Atlanta at 11:45 am on Tuesday and will be driving to Athens. If your timing is close text me @ 617 953 4759 w/ your arrival time & flight info and I’ll be happy to get you to Athens. If my flight is on time I can wait until around 1 pm. I’m on JetBlue # 1097 if you want to check my flight status. Otherwise, 305, yes the shuttle is the best way to go.

You boys should thank heavens you have Lurleen to pretty up that picture!
I just read about the Isbell documentary and thought how much fun it would be to have a screening at Homecoming (maybe “fun” isn’t the correct word considering the subject matter “appropriate”). Next year, perhaps…
Back to report writing…I’ll see you Heathens on Wednesday pm!

Re: HeAthens Homecoming 3/29-4/1 2023
I must need to change mouthwash/deodorant. I’ve had two dates bail on me this weekend, so I’ll be solo at least the first few nights. I may have a friend from VA meeting me later in the weekend.
I’d love to meet up with any heathens tonight or tomorrow
. I’m currently stuck in traffic outside of Tupelo. Many of you have my cell. Feel free to call/text.

Re: HeAthens Homecoming 3/29-4/1 2023
I just pulled into the Holdiay inn express parking lot. Both of my previous HHC partners bailed…perhaps I should change deodorant.
I have an extra ticket for tonight and possibly tomorrow. A buddy from Virginia just agreed to join me either tomorrow or Friday.
Just let me know….
I am solo today and part of (possibly all of) tomorrow. Hit me up if you want to grab a meal or some coffee.

Re: HeAthens Homecoming 3/29-4/1 2023
Night one: Putting the rock into rock n roll. Damn, those boys just rocked the fuck out from beginning to end including arranging some more ballad-y songs e.g. Maria, in full rock mode.
Turns out white men can jump: I spotted glennwordman during "Every Famous Flamout" (complete w/ horns) pogoing like it was 1975 and I actually said, "do you see Glenn doing his David Thompson imitation? I can't believe i said that but i do think it captured the moment and rightfully so; that song just COOKED the way it was meant to. For the youngsters and/or non-sports fans in the house, David Thompson was a basketball player who starred at North Carolina State and in the NBA and was particularly known for his vertical leap (something like 48 inches from a standing start; for the non-mathematically inclined that's 4 freakin' feet).
Dreams, reality, who knows? After the frenzy (true story) caused by "Every Famous Flameout" Patterson asked "what should we play next?" In an incredible spontaneous display of enthusiasm and great taste the crowd chanted as one, "Sea Island Lonely! Sea Island Lonely! Ummmm, actually I was the only one shouting out that request and I doubt Patterson could even hear me. But come on Patterson, you've got the horns right there. If there's ever a time to break out this beautiful rarity, this is that moment. Please. Pretty please?
This was surely one of the shorter DBT shows (especially in a non-curfew venue) I've seen but I don't think anyone had any complaints. I certainly didn't. As I said, the emphasis in this rock show was on the ROCK and the band played pretty much straight out for the entire 1:40 or 50. Cooley in particular was absolutely shredding on guitar throughout. It had not previously registered w/ me that only Jay and Matt do the background vocals on "The Driver." But Cooley was not slacking off. His solos and fills were superb and lifted that already intense song to a new level.
It's hard not to give credence to the occasional complaints that Cooley doesn't vary his portion of the set enough. But then you hear him do an absolutely scorching, totally committed version of "Zip City" and you say to yourself (or at least I do), if he played it like that for 365 straight days, I'd listen to it every damn time.
Patterson did not play an angry young man on tv but he did play an angry middle aged man on stage before and during a totally rocking passionate supercharged version of "Thoughts and Prayers." His introductory railing against pro gun politicians who bring us tragedies like Nashville was angry, appropriately emotional, pointed and totally on target and it carried through to the performance of the song.
Seeing everyone was more overwhelming than ever before. It's unbelievable how many people I know or at least recognize at this point and it's truly a pleasure meeting and greeting every single one. We may be a cult but I'm damn proud to be a part of it. Possibly more on this tomorrow. And possibly more on the rock show if and when seeing the set list inspires further thoughts/recollections. Semi random thought along those lines: In addition to the highlights already mentioned, "Three Dimes Down" was superb.
And not one, but two Springsteen songs. A rousing "Adam Raised a Cain" and a powerful "Buttholeville/State Trooper." I haven't heard "Adam" a lot but I have heard it a few times and I don't think I've ever heard it played and sung better than tonight.
An inimitable "only Patterson can do that" intro story to "Harold and Maude" was a first (at least for me) and was funny and interesting. As the man said (and Patterson reported) "after all, it's not everyone who gets to be immortalized in a song" (or words to that effect).
Night two ahead in less than 24 hours!!
