Sad news. Longtime DBT artist, confidant, brother in arms, and friend Wes Freed passed away unexpectedly today. Details and arrangements are pending. What a huge blow to the band and the extended Heathen family. On behalf of 3dd, our thoughts go out to Wes‘s family and the band. As more news emerges about memorials and/or ways we can honor Wes’s memory, we will post them here.

Just an astonishing, horrific piece of news. I still can't quite process it.

Wes was my friend, and, a look around our house at the dozens of pieces of his work will tell you, one my favorite artists. I wear his tee shirts so often I didn't realize I had one on until long after I heard the news. I'm still too stunned to say much more, except rest well, Wes. You were one of a kind.

Awful news.

Of the two newbies I've managed to get interested in DBT's music, in both cases the first step was them spotting a Wes Freed record cover, then having to pick it up and ask what the band were like. Perfect combination of artwork and sound and a huge loss.

My thoughts are with anyone on here who knew him.

The Richmond, Virginia-based Freed, who attended art school at Virginia Commonwealth University, began collaborating with Drive-By Truckers on 2001’s Southern Rock Opera, the group’s ambitious double album inspired by the 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash. Working with a mix of marker, watercolor, and acrylic paint — usually on wood — Freed went on to design the album art for the next seven Truckers albums, including 2004’s The Dirty South, which Freed told writer Matt Wake was his favorite cover in a 2019 interview. As Wake expertly put it then: “Freed’s art looks just like Truckers music sounds.”

Terrible loss for both the art and music communities. I'll cherish all his art on my walls...one of a kind.

Here’s Wes’ response to an email I sent to him inquiring about the origin of the Cooley Bird…
“Wes Freed” wrote:Hey John , here's the ''short version'' of the Cooley-bird evolution. Back in the 80's all the punk rock chicks (around here at least )were into collecting pink flamingo chotchkes. S&P shakers , swizzle sticks , the yard flamingoes, etc.It was probably because of the John Waters dilm , but who knows. My 1st wife was one of them. So we had a lot of PF stuff in our house. Somewhere along the line I thought a sinister looking black Flamingo would look cool, so I made a few drawings , did some paintings on leather jackets & denim cutoffs, etc. Then it just kinda faded away. 13 or so years later , I'm woking on the DDay cover & booklet art , & trying to think of a cool image. I remembered the BF , & did some drawings. I described it to P over the phone ( this was before we had a scanner), and there was a long silence when he heard about the ''black flamingo''. But he trusted me I guess (at least enough to reserve judgement til they saw the drawings) and the rest , as they say...
I'm pretty sure it was Jyl that came up with Cooley bird for a name , as opposed to the popular ''Death Birds''. Since then they've evolved into more of a long-necked crow than a flamingo, but that's the law of the jungle. Adapt or die.
RIP Wes

Wes Freed: April 25th, 1964 - September 4th, 2022

My band Drive-By Truckers met Wes Freed 25 years ago in Richmond Virginia on September 5th, 1997. We had been invited by Wes and his then wife Jyl to play the Capital City Barn Dance, a sort of old-timey hillbilly variety-show, meets rock-show that they put on every month back then. Wes and Jyl had seen us play the Bubbapalooza Festival at The Star Community Bar in Atlanta back in May and had liked us enough to ask us to come to Richmond that fall.

We played the Capital City Barn Dance at Flood Zone, which was way bigger than the places we tended to play back then and was sold out for the occasion. Thanks to that, DBT had a huge short cut towards building a following in Richmond, which became (and remains) one of our strongest markets.

That evening, we all crashed at Wes and Jyl’s house on Mechanicsville Rd, outside of town. The house looked like the most amazing haunted house ever, filled with Wes’ art. Upon walking in the front door, just past the yard full of tombstones for all of Wes’ favorite dead country singers, a well with a skeleton crawling out of it and an Indian Motorcycle, also with a skeleton upon it, we all saw walls covered nearly floor to ceiling with his paintings.

The paintings seemed to defy time and place, as they all seemed to exist in their own universe, a place that Wes called Willard’s Garage. Upon getting to know Wes, we realized that he saw the world the way he painted it. Cooley and I were already writing the album that became Southern Rock Opera, and when we first walked in, we looked at each other and both said “He has to do the artwork for the rock opera”.

It was love at first sight.

Since then, Wes has done the album covers for nearly every release from 2001 onward, as well as singles, posters (Lots of posters!), T-shirts, backdrops and every imaginable array of related items for our band. His artwork is as synonymous with DBT as our actual songs or live stage show. He has been a true collaborator and we always have considered him a part of the band. He’s also one of my best friends in the world.

Wes Freed left our realm on Sunday Morning, September 4th 2022, one day shy of the 25th anniversary of our beautiful friendship. We are all devastated and heartbroken by this loss.

In addition to his genius (and I don’t use that word very often at all) for the visual mediums for which he was famous, he was also a fine singer and songwriter, a charismatic performer, a super intelligent and hilarious conversationalist, and one of the sweetest souls I have ever met. His spirit and generosity could only be matched by his
brilliance and sense of humor. I’ve literally never spent a less than stellar moment in his presence.

Wes was preceded by his late wife Jyl and brother Michael Armstrong Freed.

Besides us and his many friends, Wes is survived by his parents Carl and Margaret Freed; his brother Kevin and his wife Lora; his sister Kathy and her husband Alan Quimby; two nieces Kendall Freed Earhart, Betsy Quimby and a nephew Ryan Quimby; and his partner and love Jackie Folkes, who has been by his side for the past nine
years and his close friend since college.

There’s so much that we don’t know, like what exactly happened. He had had some health issues, but it seemed to all that the worst of that was over and he was actually going home that morning to begin what was hoped to be a long and much happier chapter of his life. Instead, word began to spread that he was gone and people far and wide who had been touched by his life and art began grieving.

Nothing has been announced or planned yet but we hope to have some kind of memorial in his honor to announce soon. We’ll keep you posted as it develops.

Anyone know if Wes' book is out of print? I recently placed an order which appeared to through fine but haven't received any notifications of it being shipped or being in transit.

I was thinking of ordering it too. I think he processed and shipped the orders himself so it wouldn't surprise me if orders aren't being fulfilled, at least for the time being.

For those not on FB, the topic of ordering items through Wes' website came up there not long ago. The word was to simply be patient as there is a lot of sorting and gaining access to accounts that need to be done before orders can be fulfilled.

Folks who are concerned about standing orders with Wes, please hit me up. I’m slowly going through his emails and trying to sort and respond but it’s painful and slow, so let me know if you haven’t heard from me.
