Determining the 3DD Community's Favorite DBT Songs Using Science

Post by Mundane Mayhem »

I've been playing with this for the past day or so for my own "rankings," but thought maybe this would be a spicy post while the band is off the road and post activity is a little slow in these parts. It's already made me make some damn near impossible choices.

Essentially, this tool starts from a big universe of options, puts two things head-to-head at a time, and then uses math I don't understand to determine which options are preferred. The more votes we have, the more interesting it is. Enjoy!

The universe of songs is as follows, in case you want to do your own rankings without other votes in there. I made some arbitrary choices to include or exclude certain covers (e.g., include Eddie Hinton and Warren Zevon, exclude Bob Dylan and Tom Petty) and live-only songs. I couldn't make up my mind on PWD. It's not here for now but can be added easily enough.

Well, there isn’t really a “halfway through,” insofar as you can just keep feeding it data forever. Feel free to revisit whenever you have a few minutes to kill ;)

There are 194 options in the pool ("ideas" in the parlance of the tool). Picking two at a time to "face off" gives something like 18,915 possible combinations, if an online permutations calculator is to be believed. I don't think this thing is totally random, but I have like 1,000 votes on the same 194 options in my personal rankings page.

Keep those votes coming! “Sandwiches for the Road” is my biggest departure from the consensus thus far. Also possible it just hasn’t had enough matchups. Every time I saw it today the other choice was like “Zip City” or some other Inner Circle HOF song.

I’m also much higher on “Mercy Buckets.” But I think we need a lot more votes before we’re close to equilibrium here.

I tried it out for a few minutes. "You Got Another" came up as a choice numerous times. I often seemed to have either choices between some of my favorites (Road Cases vs Goode's Field Road) or songs that I don't think anyone would ever rank as a favorite (Mrs. Dubose vs Grandpa Rock City). Rarely got an easy choice of something like Road Cases vs. Grandpa Rock City.

ETA: Went back for a few minutes while waiting for a phone call and got some easier match-ups---easiest was Dancing Ricky vs. Women Without Whiskey

Same. Lots of tough choices!

And the results seem pretty accurate
