Thanks for posting the video. I’d been looking for a video of this song or a list of lyrics; it hit me hard on Saturday.

I was so thankful to make Homecoming this year and grateful for your company!

Cross posting this from the "annex" on FB

The last few years I haven’t done the Homecoming write up thing because I was pretty obsessed with work and as soon as we got home I shifted my mind back to making my sales goals and hitting the ground running. Last year I was about to embark on a marathon travel schedule and a new position in my company. Two months and a face plant in a dingy hotel room in California later and I was starting a different journey without the sales goals or the job. Instead of fighting for a commission check I was fighting for my life and faced an uncertain future. Homecoming was in my rear view mirror as well and I wasn’t positive I’d even get to another one but it was always there in the back of mind, the music, the friendships, the love and the laughter. The thing is last years Homecoming never really ended. So many of you stayed with me online, via text and even in person when it was possible. Because of that I really didn't think too much about 2020, the possibility was too remote to focus on instead I focused on “seeing” my friends every day on Facebook and doing what I needed to in order to keep going.

About two weeks after my LVAD surgery Homecoming tickets went on sale and for the first time I started thinking that we might just be able to pull it off. We got encouragement from so many of you but it wasn’t until after Christmas that it started looking like it just might happen. T
hen I started dreaming on it. I listened to the Dexateens a lot, I listened to the Unraveling more than was reasonable. I started my social media duties for the fundraiser and was determined to make this year our best year yet. Then it happened. We pulled into Athens last Wednesday and sat down at Ted’s for lunch. I looked out the window and across the street there were the people. One by one they appeared in my view and a wave of happiness overcame me and hasn’t left me yet. We were there. We were home.

Often when you anticipate something with all of your being you’re disappointed by the reality. I had hyped myself up for the Dexateens so much I could barely stand it. Then, as we were having supper, Bobby Matt passed by our table with a shit eating grin and said “I get to play a Dexateens show!”. Then it was real. Whatever expectations I had couldn’t have prepare me for the reality. As I told many of you I hadn’t seen John Smith or heard those Singlewide songs in a decade and damn were they welcome. We were standing at the tiki bar and everyone was there. Bubba in his familiar corner spot the Hendersons with their warm smiles and Russell pouring out all his drunken love as we watched those other boys from Alabama do their thing. It was glorious. Can you whoop it? Yes!

Then it was time for the main event. I ran out of superlatives for Drive-By Truckers years ago. Their music is the balm that my heart and soul needs and they never disappoint. Thursday nights show was no exception. Somehow it was fitting that the show opened with the unusual instance of Shut Up and Get on the Plane because figuratively that’s we did. The show was excellent as usual and featured perhaps the only three song suite of death/suicide songs in Rock with Heroin Again, Pin Hits the Shell and Do it Yourself. The irony of watching the pumping fists and the sad songs was not lost on me and reminded me of Jason’s famous line the The Secret Tio a Happy Ending where he mimics the audience “play that song about the depression again…”. They aren’t sad songs if you always remember it’s great to be alive.

We didn’t make Friday nights show because I had pushed a little too hard and Beth was exhausted. I had tremendous guilt about this until my wife knocked some sense into me and let me know it was OK. Then I fell asleep. Of course part of the reason was that Saturday was the big day. The Nuci’s auction and the final night of Rock. The auction has become my favorite gathering in a long string of gathering at Homecoming. I root for items to go for high dollars and think of who they can help with that money. Then of course is that last day of real socializing and somehow it always seems more intimate. If something needs to be said that’s when we all say it because there is no tomorrow. Luke and John and I had been increasing our expectations for the fundraiser nearly every week and it exceeded them. We saw old friends we met new ones and we were honored to receive a gold record from Dave and Nuci’s Space for our efforts, which really aren’t efforts at all. They’re labors of love.

I’m not going to say much about Saturdays show except that Jerry Joseph backed by the band was something to behold Sugar Smacks and Dead Confederate are going stay with me for a long while. Then of course the main event. 32 songs (or is it 31 with a bonus? Lol) and three hours later we were spent. All of our hopes dream and expectations had been met and it was the sad time when we had to say goodbye. Thank you to everyone who helped me remember not to hug or shake and of course when I made some exceptions those hugs were most welcome. When I said that I hoped we’d be back next year every single one of you said “you will!”. All of you filled my heart with joy and it remains full back here in rainy Mississippi. Now I continue on my journey back to health and as the saying goes “god willing and the creek don’t rise” we’ll all be back in Athens together next year and all of our non DBT friends and family will once again ask “why do you vacation in Georgia in February?”. We know the answer.

A few thought:

The lack of songs from The Big to Do and Go Go Boots is unsurprising, as most of those songs have fallen off the set lists long ago. That said, I'm surprised that Everybody Needs Love didn't surface

It's disappointing that English Oceans is going the same way

Shocked that there was no appearance of What it Means, Ever South or Kinky Hypocrite

Cooley really stayed away from the quiet stuff; while he did play Imagine, he avoided Sounds Better in the Song, First Air of Autumn, Loaded Gun, Space City, etc.

No World of Hurt?????

Cooley did play Sounds Better in the Song, on Thursday night (I think you need to hire a fact checker Zip, those reds and blues must really be getting to you).

As for the rest of yall's back and forth on the setlists, in the end they play what they play and it's all fuckin glorious. When I see the truckers, I honestly really truthfully 100% do not give a damn what songs they play because - esp at homecoming - it's all great. Would it be nice to hear this song or that song, yeah but that's always the case with any band at any show. But in the end so what. IMO homecoming weekend always scores 100 out of a possible 100 and you can't improve on that.

They also covered Sign O' the Times.

Set lists are fun to talk about and analyze and I imagine that I do it as much as anyone. But when it comes to the live rock show I said a long time ago and still believe today that it doesn't matter what they play. I'm w/ Clams word for word on this one.

These aren't complaints, just observations. Based on past Athens runs, there are certain songs you sorta expect to organically appear. As the band's catalog gets deeper, it's harder to fit all those in

100% with you, It simply doesn't matter. You always get a few you don't expect and they bring the Rock every fucking night, like you say, especially at Homecoming. No complaints from this corner.

Absolutely. I get it. I like talking about this stuff more than enough to have earned my DBT geek badge and I appreciate you doing the work for your post. I think clams was making a different point, w/ which i agree.

I think it's impressive that DBT regularly play songs from each and every one of their albums. Very few bands manage that. And if you were at Homecoming you got at least 1 song from every album they've released.

Just listened to about half of the Dexateens set. Even better than I remembered.

For next year's openers, I want Dexateens on Thursday, Linqua Franqa on Friday, and Dexateens on Saturday.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking Matt set a record for number of sets played at a Homecoming. And he rocked every fucking note.

Finally getting the time (and energy, since Sunday was a goner) to put down my thoughts here. First things first - met a bunch of great people at HC; some from here and some not - if you saw a tall skinny dude rocking out in a red rain jacket, that was me (and if you were one of the kind strangers who rewarded my "dancing" with a free drink, thanks!). Only got to put a few screen-names to faces, but I'm sure I ran into more of you than I realized. Special shoutout to Bubba for giving me rides and for being someone I could talk to about DBT, politics, etc. all day - as interesting and kind in person as on here! Already looking forward to next HC - truly a special crowd it attracts.

This was my first homecoming and boy did it not disappoint. Got in Friday for what was supposed to be a double-date trip as recently as a month ago... one-breakup and one 3rd-wheel adverse couple later and I made it to homecoming all by my own free self :D. Feb 14 + Rosemary/Armageddon that night were highlights for me, and made it even clearer that ABAAC and The Unraveling are sister albums to me. As an avowed ABAAC fan, I have not been able to listen to anything except the Unraveling since HC - every time I think I'll just listen to the first two songs I get pulled in again... there's a certain sense of despair in both albums that is somehow addictive due to how relatable and raw each are. To add to this, Patterson's stage presence and sustained GREAT vocals all weekend were truly a present. I know I shouldn't be surprised at this point given how consistently "on" DBT are live, but holy smokes...

In regards to the Cooley discussion re: song count, I'm still split about whether he just wanted to play rockers (save for Imagine which might've been a test for the drunkest of us; myself included) or whether he was making a certain point with his song choices - either deliberately or subconsciously. With his mentions of writer's block in recent interviews, playing Gravity's Gone 3x times seemed very self-aware (if I'm remembering correctly, that song came about during an earlier spell of writer's block). There was a certain sense of anger/fuck this/punk rock that came through with his song choices, especially contrasting with Patterson's pure joy on songs like Let There Be Rock or 18 Wheels or Steve McQueen. Maybe this is just a general stylistic difference that I've never noticed before - but outside of Marry Me and Birthday Boy, his songs seemed even more political/bitter than Patterson's (whose lyrics are more overt).

Now, don't get me wrong - this isn't a complaint post about Cooley at all; his vocal performances were spot on and he shredded all 3 nights (side note: don't think I've ever seen him play slide so much, but I loved how it mixed with Patterson's more direct guitar playing + Jay's jangly/poppy tones on keys and guitar).

But, just looking at Saturday night: Surrender Under Protest > Ramon Casiano > Grievance Merchants > Ghost to Most > Women Without Whiskey > Where The Devil Don't Stay > Uncle Frank > Once They Banned Imagine - before finally get a respite with Marry Me. That's a damn political list, and I thought it was brilliant how Ghost to Most came after Grievance Merchants - written over a decade apart yet a lot of similarities whether it's war/violence, machoism/male insecurity, etc. You could argue that WWW isn't necessarily political, but it comes with the same darkness/despair/self-loathing that's present on a track like Armageddon... it's all my fault; everything's my fault. Anyways, I'm probably overthinking this, but he didn't pull out that many lighter tunes (although admittedly it's all relative with DBT's catalog). Just a few which may have balanced it more: Eyes like Glue, Lisa's Birthday, Daddy's Cup, Carl Perkin's Cadillac, Filthy and Fried, Kinky Hypocrite, Cartoon Gold, Hearing Jimmy Loud, and Cartoon Gold. Again, not a complaint, but definitely thought Cooley's song choices were more in line with the spirit of the Unraveling (even though he only has 2 songs on there!) - whether it was conscious or not, watching greatness fade into darkness is clearly influencing him.

Proof-reading this and besides realizing how much I rely on parentheses in my writing (eek!), I can't believe I forgot to mention Jay's outstanding contributions on keys and guitar. First time I've heard A&F close w/ just piano (Bubba agreed, but someone correct me if I'm wrong), but it was fucking awesome. I also didn't realize how many guitar solos from the American Band songs were his - his playing is so catchy yet tasteful, I can't help but think of Mike Campbell. Of course, Matt/EZB were a force of a nature as always, but no surprises there.

I'm sure I'll think of some more things upon my next Unraveling listen, but last piece of rambling is this: Cooley's slowed down Once They Banned Imagine reminded me of the Grateful Dead slowing down songs like Pretty Peggy-O and Friend of the Devil. Takes a lot of guts to do songs like that in the middle of a rock show, but he killed it.

Edit: Last rambling fact - only caught half of Jerry Joseph's set (biggest regret of weekend), but loved Dead Confederate so much I figured out the chords and lyrics (more or less) viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9420 if anybody's interested.

Amen to that! I know everyone has their "favorite side" to stand at a Truckers show, but put me between Patterson and Jay. There are times that he is sitting at the piano, but playing guitar... you can see Cooley and Patterson playing guitar but hear a melody or lead out of nowhere, and see that it is Jay playing guitar sitting at the piano.

The guy is definitely the Swiss Army Knife of the band (although I bet eh could play a mean pedal steel), and definitely the musical MVP.

Thanks, LL. It was great to meet you and to spend a little time talking about the big and small things. I am sorry I missed your dancing exhibition. Sounds like it was a sight to behold.

Nice write up, LL (parentheticals notwithstanding). Interesting parallels between ABAAC and The Unraveling.

Cooley is enigmatic, presumably because that's the way he wants it to be. Speculating about his motives and intent will never be more than a guessing game. But I think the odds are in favor of him making choices intentionally (except when, you know, he doesn't like playing a certain song more than once).

It's no secret that DBT's audience skews heavily in the direction of older folks. But I gotta say there's an impressive amount of serious young talent around these parts. I am regularly blown away by the musical sophistication, knowledge and insights of posters like LL, Shakespeare, Jack Flash, maybe Zip Up to Michigan (not sure of his age) and there are others. Keep up the good work please.

01. Patterson Hood Intro
02. Days of Heaven
03. Bone Towers
04. Hyrum Black
05. San Acacia
06. Sugar Smacks
07. Dead Confederate

The Stiff Boys are:
Patterson Hood – guitar, backing vocals
Mike Cooley – guitar, banjo
Jay Gonzalez – keys

There was a 15-20 minute break between Patterson's intro and the start of the set. I cut the dead air and crossfaded to make it seamless.
