Perhaps that too. here is the info re: PJ stage mics:

"The audience mics for the bootleg recordings are an AT shotgun and an Oktava condenser, each on stage left and right. “The shotguns are outside, pointed towards the outside and up part of the venue, and the Oktavas are pointed towards the crowd. I also have an AudioTechnica AT 822 stereo mic at front-of-house. The mics onstage are reasonably time-aligned to the mix. "

I feel like I've seen them at DBT shows before, at least maybe Brooklyn Bowl 2018? Does the band record all their shows? Or just certain shows?

Unfortunately, the best song, the penultimate one w/ Cooley on banjo and the band locking in at a higher level should have been the closer and it would have ended things on a high note even for those of us who were less enthusiastic. But there was one more, For all i know, "Dead Confederate" may be a great song (hard to tell hearing it for the first time in the live setting) but it's not a show closer.
I saw Dead Confederate one of the first times JJ played it in Jackson and was blown away then and again last night. I liked Sugarsmack quite a bit as well and thought the lyrics to both were amazing. Until fall of 2018 I hadn’t seen Jerry Joseph in about 20 years but after seeing him in Jackson and now again last night with the band my fandom is secured.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Fighting the Post-HC reality that I have to go to work today. Did a quick-look at the setlists:

Total Songs: 82
Patterson: 43 Songs (including the 3-song finale on Saturday)
Cooley: 39 Songs

Here is where it gets interesting:
Patterson: 5 total repeats (x2: Armageddon, Awaiting Resurrection, Lookout Mountain; x3 Heroin Again)
Cooley: 17 total repeats (x2: 72, 3DD, Grievance Merchants, Marry Me, Pin Hits the Shell, Ramon Casiano, Uncle Frank, WWW; x3: Devil Don't Stay, Get on the Plane, Gravity's Gone; x4: Ghost to Most)

Now I love me some Cooley, but someone needs to say it: "Cooley brings nothing special to Homecoming, other than being Cooley". Patterson clearly takes great care in selecting his songs and not repeating songs, whereas Cooley just plays what he wants at the moment... there is charm in this, and perhaps something to respect, but over a 3-night stand, it seems a bit disrespectful to such a passionate fan base.

Tossing in "Zip City" instead of the 4th Ghost to Most would have made a difference in the end of the set on Saturday, but if his idea of "delving deep" is to slow down the set with (a slowed-down version of) "Once They Banned Imagine", instead of tossing in "One of These Days" or ANY other song that wasn't played 2-3x yet, then I think it is safe to say that "Cooley brings nothing special to Homecoming, other than being Cooley"
We got messed up minds for these messed up times...

I've always just figured that Homecoming, like a lot of things with the band, are mainly Patterson and Cooley just says OK, cool. My old bones had a hard enough time just showing up and standing still over the last several days and I can't imagine what it's like to actually rock that hard three nights in a row. It doesn't feel disrespectful to me when you consider how he played rather than what he played.

It’s the blessing and the curse of the band’s “no set lists” aesthetic. You get what you get over a multi-night run

A band like My Morning Jacket will curate a three-night run to have no repeats, which is awesome if you go all three nights. I think Homecoming could do SOME of that, but to ask them (particularly Cooley) to overplan the weekend is asking DBT to not be DBT
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

I agree w/ scotto and zip.

Phungi, you raise some interesting questions about "big issues" like what's homecoming about, what's the legitimacy of fan expectations, what's the obligation of an artist to meet fans' expectations, what's the nature and purpose of live performance, etc. But on the specifics I think you come up short. It seems to me that to fully consider the issues you raise, one would want to know at least:

What's the aggregate number of Cooley and Hood songs on all DBT albums?
What is the percentage of different songs Cooley played on multi night stands over the past X years?
How do those numbers compare to Hood's?
Of the X covers DBT plays most, how many are sung by Hood and how many by Cooley?

Beyond that I'm really not sure that "disrespect" is the right word to describe what you're getting at even assuming you're right. Like the mainstream media's difficulty in calling so many of Trump's remarks "lies", there's a level of intent assumed in a term like "disrespect" that I don't think applies to what you're describing, unless you really are saying that Cooley's numbers are intended to be disrespectful which would raise this discussion to a whole 'nother level. I suggest that "not caring" would be closer to the mark if there is a mark at all.

I also wonder about your inclusion of all 4 playings of "Ghost." This is literally correct of course but not particularly germane to your point, which is the number of different songs played over 3 nights. The 4th "Ghost" doesn't add anything to that analysis. Yes, the second "Ghost" was a slot that could have been filled by a different song but on your own numbers, the likelihood is that it would have been replaced by another repeat anyway (and your suggestion of Zip City would have definitely been a repeat). I'm pretty sure that whatever else it might have been the extra "Ghost" was mostly just a mistake. Given that, adding it to a statistical analysis seems to me to be distorting and unfair. The whole brouhaha about the 4th playing seems to me to have been blown out of all proportion. We are talking about a night on which the band played 30+ songs as the culmination of 3 straight nights in which it played an AVERAGE of over 27 songs per night, all played w/out setlists. In that context a single mistake isn't even a blip on the radar screen.

Yeah, Cooley played too many repeats (and honestly more than he usually does over a 2-3 night run) but what are you gonna do? I complained a little before Saturday night's show but in the end I had a blast and Cooley is gonna do what Cooley is gonna do.

I think "not caring" is akin with "disrespect" and perhaps even more egregious. The 4th Ghost wasn't a major contributing factor, as I thought much of the same after night 2. You can run overall percentages of "Cooley HC songs to Total Cooley Songs", or look at the total output over 3 nights and all the data... the fact remains: Cooley tends to repeat the same songs without regard for "trying to mix it up" and/or "give the people what they want". It isn't that his quality of playing is lacking, or that each and every song isn't enjoyable in the moment, but as a "collective whole", Cooley isn't bringing the same level of creativity and thought to the setlist as Patterson.

My point about "all the data" is that the data would most likely support the proposition that it's unfair to expect anything else from Cooley. He is who is and he does what he does regardless of the setting. Or put another way, I'm asking whether fan expectations of more/different from Cooley are fair or realistic. Which is why i think "what's homecoming about" is an interesting question. I.e. does it or should it "require" a different approach/response? And that's what I meant by not caring: that it doesn't occur to Cooley to treat homecoming any differently than other shows. I did not mean to say that he doesn't care about the quality of his music, his performance or, at some level, the fan experience.

I'll try to be brief (Wild shouts of approval from the crowd)

All three shows were terrific.

For me, Friday night was nearly perfect. I can't imagine any substitutions, even though there were, over all three nights, songs I wanted to hear but did not get. ("One of These Days" being the one that springs right to mind). They played extraordinarily well, even for them. The vocals were incredible. They fixed some of the sound gremlins from Night #1. The "Unraveling" songs integrated beautifully. I was so glad to get "Angels and Fuselage" to end. I left on a cloud.

Getting four of my favorite all-time song over three nights certainly was salve to any omissions. File the occurrence under "shit happens. Shit especially happens when bands play 2.5-3+ hour shows night after night under the most intense (but loving) scrutiny, not to mention playing for nearly five hours that night, including the full-set rehearsal Patterson alluded to. Not to mention all the myriad responsibilities of being back in your band's hometown and having people metaphorically--mostly--tugging at your sleeve for a week, and not wanting to let anyone down. Shit. Happens.

The Tiki Bar Third Night tradition may have to end after three years, as it was a shitshow. The camera at the far end taking up 10% of the space did not help. I spent a lot of my night as an unpaid "Assistant Camera Op", trying first not to veer into it myself (thus limiting my awesome dance moves), and then trying to prevent increasingly oblivious drinkers veer into it. Eventually a drunk toppled into the tripod, wiping out the set up. the camera guy picked the whole apparatus up, and reset. Then the drunk did it again. (He was then escorted out of the club). At that point, the camera operator gave up. Lots of guys--always guys--battering their way up on to the ledge, despite all our gentle attempts to guide them toward the center where there was less danger of a chain reaction of toppling. That said, it was good to hang with the folks that were there, but was just a continual effort to refocus on the great stuff happening on stage.

The four breakfasts with my fellow HeAthens. The dinner with Bubba, Scotto, and Doc. (Got my vegetables on!) The 2nd Annual Backyard Gathering, getting so many wonderful photos. The joyful gathering and raffle at Max's. Nuci's, as ever. The continual, evolving, never-ending conversations, as if they were all of a piece, no matter who you were talking to. All the new faces and names, effortlessly "getting it". This thing of ours.

The feeling in the places, from the 40 Watt to every corner of Athens where I journeyed, was something I will carry with me as long as I live. I'm very, very grateful to and for all of you, and this community, and this magnificent band. See some of you Friday at Webster. See hopefully all of you next year in Athens...
I’d have a lot of nerve to go feigning shock and outrage/If I'd been my example I’d be worse

I'm not going to dig into the data stuff but I'll say I was mildly disappointed that 21st Century USA wasn't played during the weekend. It's the track on The Unraveling that I gravitate to the most as "the routes people cut through capitalism's wreckage" (to paraphrase that Pitchfork review) is one of my favorite subjects. I guess Homecoming isn't the most ideal locale for it to be played but it wouldn't have stuck out like a sore thumb, by any means. I thankfully did get to hear it in both Berkeley and SF on that Dimmer Twins run out there but it would have been the cherry on top of Homecoming for me to have heard it on Saturday night when the more explicitly political songs were the theme of the set.

I just wanted to drop by and thank everyone for their hospitality. It was my first HC and I really didn't know what to expect other than three nights of great shows. At the Friday hangout, a few folks told me that the shows have almost become secondary to the weekend itself, which I initially found to be a pretty bold statement. By midway thru the gathering at Nuci's, I totally got it, and honestly was overwhelmed by how amazing this whole community is. I'm just so appreciative that I got to experience it firsthand and can't wait to come back next year. Hopefully, getting home last night and giving my wife the Cooley Bird necklace I won in the silent auction paves the way for another Valentine's Day weekend missed in 2021.

As much as the HC crowd has responded to Linqua Franqa, I'd like to see her back in an opening slot next year.

Many thoughts and reflections running thru my head. First and foremost how great it was to see everyone again, and how especially great it was to meet in person folks who I've known online forever (scotto, sacto, schlanky).

As for Mr. Cooley, all I can say is he plays what he wants, when he wants, and apparently as many times as he wants  and that's just fine with me.

No let's discuss the openers, which I thought were better this year than they've been in a long time. The Dexateens were fuckin awesome - super tight and fun. The crowd was totally into them. I don't know them as well as some of you but I loved that guy on the left - I could watch him play that telecaster all night long. Grade A+. Night two - the camp kids were great as always - loved how they traded instruments and vocals throughout their set. Grade A+. I also loved Grand Vapids - energetic, loud, bluesy, kind of a Television/Cars vibe. Grade B (downgraded from B+ due to some questionable facial hair). Now for the controversial Jerry Joseph - just as I did at the Brooklyn Bowl last summer - FUCKIN LOVED HIM. Loved the songs, loved his banter, loved his energy, loved his cool resonator guitar, loved his broken eyeglasses, loved full band DBT backing him up, loved SUGAR SMACK! Cannot wait for that record to come out. Grade A+.

More to come.

Damn, Bubba, you inspire me.. that, and I can't focus on work today, so I analyzed the last 5 Homecoming Setlists (2016-2020).

Total Songs on DBT Studio Albums: 172 (99/58% Hood, 52/30% Cooley, 21/12% Others)
Total Songs on DBT Studio Album (excluding others): 151 (99 or 66% Hood, 52 or 34% Cooley)
What is the percentage of different songs Cooley played on multi night stands over the past 5 years? Cooley 38/78 or 48.8%
How do those numbers compare to Hood's? Hood 40/78 or 51.2%
Of the X covers DBT plays most, how many are sung by Hood and how many by Cooley? Over the past 5 years, the average 2.4 (2-3) covers per 3-night run, all sung by Hood

So, that leaves us with:
1. Over the past 5 Homecoming 3-night runs, they average 38 (Cooley) and 40 (Hood) songs each. Of these, Hood averages 3 repeats and Cooley averages 16 repeats.
2. Over the past 5 Homecoming 3-night runs, Hood averages 0.4 "All 3 Night Repeats" whereas Cooley averages 4 "All 3 Night Repeats"
3. Cooley plays 0 covers, so his average songs over the past 5 HC 3-night runs (38), minus repeats (16), represents playing 22 unique songs, or 42% (22/52) of his entire catalog
4. Patterson plays 2.4 covers, so his average songs over the past 5 HC 3-night runs (40), minus repeats (3) and covers (2), represents playing 35 unique songs, or 35% (35/99) of his entire catalog

Conclusion:
1. Cooley may repeat songs, but he plays a higher percentage of his catalog than Patterson
2. The stats don't lie, I am wrong
We got messed up minds for these messed up times...

I didn't particularly care for the music but the bassist's baby mullet/stache combo was on point.

Holy smokes, phungi. I cannot believe you did all that number crunching. But thanks for doing all that number crunching. The graciousness is no surprise but still appreciated.

not only was it fun, but a perfect activity while listening to Night 1... also, while your belief in "graciousness" is appreciated, I was simply channeling one of my academic mentors who constantly claimed "the data are what the data are", or as Cooley might say: "Like data-less phungi caught on lonesome posts and live to tell it, how hard it is for smarter men without the facts to sell it"
