This place seems kinda remote. Just curious - how many people attended this show?

I just became aware of this "editorial" from the Roanoke Times, published ahead of the DBT show in Rocky Mount:

"The band started off singing songs about drinking and dirt-track racing and, yes, their beloved Lynyrd Skynyrd. The only difference between their songs and hard-rocking country music was, well, nothing really — just how it was categorized"beantownbubba wrote:I just became aware of this "editorial" from the Roanoke Times, published ahead of the DBT show in Rocky Mount:

Umm no, the politics have always been there. They had this line on their FIRST FUCKING ALBUM- "The devil says the only thing that's buggin him
is Hell's filling up with Republicans"
I hate stupidity and can't figure out why this stuff continues to be written even if the piece is ostensibly praising them.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Agreed. The reason that I didn't make the very same comment myself is that although the article starts out that way, it then goes on to essentially say that the politics has always been there. Bad writing and fuzzy thinking for sure.Tequila Cowboy wrote:"The band started off singing songs about drinking and dirt-track racing and, yes, their beloved Lynyrd Skynyrd. Aside from every paragraph containing Lynyrd Skynyrd, it's pretty good. Well, that and the "word" "politicalization" in the headline, about which I have only this to say.beantownbubba wrote:Agreed. they probably deserve a tiny bit of credit for not having a single "whiskey-drenched/soaked/fueled," seemingly obligatory for any writing on our bandJohn A Arkansawyer wrote:Aside from every paragraph containing Lynyrd Skynyrd, it's pretty good. The article isn't attributed to any writer than I can see. Weird.

Editorials are typically not bylined. They're to be taken as the position of the publication itself, not the author.Rocky wrote:The article isn't attributed to any writer than I can see. Weird.

The Drive-By Truckers began as a souped-up Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band

Just remove every paragraph with the phrase "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in it and it's pretty good.Flea wrote:I did not make it pastbeantownbubba wrote:I just became aware of this "editorial" from the Roanoke Times, published ahead of the DBT show in Rocky Mount:

Rocky: Rocky Mount is a small town. Great music venue at The Harvester, with a big volunteer organization. They have a lot of great bands on a regular basis. Probably holds 400 to 500 hundred for a standing show. We probably had a couple 100 for The Truckers.

ProTip: I've noticed that the first show of a week is often in a smaller venue. If that's what you like, that's the show you want to attend.LagoonField wrote:Rocky: Rocky Mount is a small town. Thanks brother. I haven't been but have always been curious about the venue. They get some GREAT shows there, especially for that size town.LagoonField wrote:Rocky: Rocky Mount is a small town. Never been but they have a good calendar.
Just a little too far for me.
But I think it does well because there is literally nothing else in that part of VA until you get to Asheville really. It's a big, under-served market.
