Another brain buster. Easiest way to do this is off the top of my head quickly:

Sinkhole
Why Henry Drinks
Aftermath USA
Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife

*Heathens can easily sub for any of the above

saying this is god damn hard is an understatement...

Living Bubba
Puttin' People On The Moon
Ronnie and Neil
Guns of Umpqua

Is this just DBT tracks or are solo songs eligible??
If so, I'd have to work Back of A Bible in there...

Talk about a fool's errand.

I'll go with
The Living Bubba
Ronnie and Neil
Let There Be Rock
Puttin' People On The Moon
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

Tougher than Cooley's but here it goes:

Living Bubba
Lookout Mtn
Sinkhole
Let There Be Rock

The Living Bubba
Ronnie and Neil
Grand Canyon
Box of Spiders

This was definitely harder than the Cooley list. The first two selections were easy. 3 and 4 really could be any number of songs.

Patterson Hood's Mt Rushmore. The people have spoken and votes have been tallied. Between the facebook comments and the thread here, there were approximately 200 votes (around the same number as Cooley). Here are the top four followed by the rest of the pack, each with the number of votes received.

84 LIVING BUBBA
45 HEATHENS
42 WORLD OF HURT
36 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN
34 Sinkhole
33 Putting People on the Moon
32 Let There Be Rock
24 What It Means
23 Righteous Path
20 Ronnie & Neil
15 Grand Canyon
14 Angels & Fuselage/Tornadoes/Ever South
11 Guns of Umpqua
10 My Sweet Annette/Something's Gotta Give/Hell No I Ain't Happy
9 Sands of Iwo Jima
8 Mercy Buckets/Southern Thing
6 Used to be a Cop/Come Back Little Star/Two Daughters
5 Back of a Bible/18 Wheels of Love/Goode's Field Road/Opening Act
4 Miss Me Gone/Pauline Hawkins/Company I Keep/Box of Spiders/Dead Drunk & Nekkid/Deeper In
3 Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance/Baggage/After the Scene Dies/Sandwiches for the Road/Why Henry Drinks/Three Alabama Icons/Do It Yourself/Daddy Needs a Drink
2 Steve McQueen/Bulldozers & Dirt/9 Bullets/Tales Facing Up/Days of Graduation/Buford Stick/Little Bonnie/Aftermath USA/Great Car Dealer War/Monument Valley/Fourth Night of My Drinking/Girls Who Smoke/Santa Fe/When Walter Went Crazy/Pollyanna/Walking Around Sense

Thanks for posting the results Clams.

I can't say I'm shocked but folks in general obviously don't see the pure genius of Ronnie and Neil like a lot of the posters here do.

Here's the thing. If it was a top 10 instead of a top 4, you would have much more accurate and comprehensive results. A lot of the songs in the lower and middle tiers above would have come in higher. The 4 vote limit caused a lot of really good songs to be lower in the rankings. However (a) blame the designers of Mt Rushmore, not me (not likely, I know) and (b) if it was 10 votes the tabulation would have been an even worse grind than it already was.

None of my top 4 are in final top 4 tabulated results but damn if that isn't one kick-ass top 4.

I'm kind of surprised at the lack of love for Daddy Learned To Fly. Great kid making sense of the loss of a parent tune. Although, I'm not sure if it would break my top 4. Top 10, sure, but probably not top 4. Top 3 would go Living Bubba, Lookout Mountain, and Hell No I Ain't Happy. Four could be either Do It Yourself, Great Car Dealer War, or Mercy Buckets.

I've loved "The Opening Act" since I first heard it on 9/28/07, but I've come to the conclusion that it belongs beside "Heathens" & "Living Bubba" as his finest song, also one that only he could write. The chill bumps never fail when that final verse kicks in.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.
